  1. DOE ARM Calibration / Validation Instrumentation Data essentially available in real-time ARM (Atmospheric Radiation Measurement) CART (Cloud And Radiation Testbed) SGP (Southern Great Plains)

  2. Central Facility (Lamont) Boundary Facilities

  3. ARM Validation Instrumentation At Central Facility Instrumentation • Profiling Instrumentation • RS-90 Vaisala radiosondes • 3-hourly launches (0230, 0530, 0830 UTC, …) • Raman LIDAR • Water vapor mixing ratio (first gate at 100 m agl, 70 m resolution) • Relative humidity (with AERI temperature profile) • 8 km at night, 3 km during day, to cloud base, 10 minute temporal • AERI (Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer) • Temperature and moisture • 3 km or to cloud base, 10 minute temporal • Passive instrument • 915 MHz, 50 MHz profiler, and 404 MHz (NOAA) (with RASS)

  4. ARM Validation Instrumentation • Integrated / Point observations • GPS (Integrated PWV) • Microwave radiometer (IPWV, liquid cloud water) • In Situ measurements (60 m tower, surface obs) • MMCR (cloud boundary) • MPL (cloud base, thin cloud layers, high cirrus)

  5. ARM Boundary Facilities(Vici, Purcell, Morris , Hillsboro KS) • Instrumentation • Supplemental RS-90 Vaisala 3-hourly sondes • AERI (temperature and moisture to 3 km) • Microwave Radiometer (IPWV, maybe a profiling system) • Vaisala Ceilometer (cloud base) • Surface meteorological obs

  6. WVIOP 2000 AATS-6 RS-90 JPL MWR tower MWR Mailbox Vaisala ITA CSR DataPlane CARL AERIBago SRL MPIDIAL HARLIE

  7. PWV Time Series

  8. 5 Dec 2000. Example Comparison

  9. Potential Comparison Methods Use CART Raman Lidar to validate aircraft WV profiles Overflights of the Central Facility Overpasses coincident with 3-hourly sonde launches Co-locate instruments at Central Facility Coordinate through ARM web page (www.arm.gov) UAH mobile integrated profiling system Goddard Raman Lidar

  10. ARM Data Access Easy data access via ARM web page www.arm.gov Freely available netcdf data files Final data sets available within ~one week
