General Lab Rules • Lab Manager Responsibilities- Ensure every student working in the lab is properly trained (including student teachers) • Ensure student training is documented and kept on file, copy forwarded to EHS. • Maintain up to date MSDS books on file in the lab and available for review to all working in the lab. • Ensure everyone in the lab wears proper PPE • Ensure all equipment (i.e. Fume Hood, Eyewash, etc.) in the lab is working properly via weekly inspections. • Conduct Lab Safety Self-Audits or your labs www.ncat.edu | Explore.   6. Accident Prevention Tips • Cleanliness • Proper storage of chemicals..not under the hoods or on top of counters and on floors. • Following all safety policies/procedures/SOP’s at all TIMES!!! www.ncat.edu | Explore. Discover. Become.

Lab Don'ts • Don’t store lunch in the lab refrigerators. • Don’t eat or drink in the lab. • Don’t leave chemicals under hood for storage. • Don’t use damaged glassware. • Don’t pour chemicals down the sink(contact EHS for proper disposal) • No playing or horseplay in the labs. • Do not wear (sandals)-closed toed shoes only www.ncat.edu | Explore. Lab DO’s • Do wear proper PPE (gloves, safety glasses, respirators) • Keep the lab clean & neat • Do label all chemical containers (make sure they are legible) • Check stored chemicals regularly for deterioration, broken containers • In the event of a chemical release and/or emergency notify University Police (334-7675)and EHS(334-7992) in the event of a spill and/or an emergency.   20. Which Regulatory Standards Apply? • NC Department of Labor- Occupational Safety and Health Division (OSHA)- Occupational Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals in Laboratories- 29 CFR 1910.1450 • NIH Guidelines (National Institute of Health)- Oversight for basic and clinical recombinant DNA research • Committees on Campus • Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee(IACUC)- Oversees those research labs that use animals in their research . • Institutional Bio-Safety Committee(IBC)- Oversees those research labs that utilize biological agents • Radiation Safety Committee- Oversees those research labs that use radiological agents.
