What Is Tobacco? • Tobacco is a substance(a plant) made of nicotine, tar and other additives. • Nicotine is a very addictive drug. • Nicotine • An addictive drug found in tobacco leaves and in all tobacco products • Tar • A thick, oily, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns • Addictive • Capable of causing a user to develop intense cravings

  3. Tobacco’s Web of Addiction • Tobacco is as addictive as heroin or cocaine. • Tobacco use soon becomes a habit, which can lead to addiction. • Tobacco has both a physical and psychological dependency The best way to prevent tobacco addiction is to never start using tobacco.

  7. How Tobacco Affects the Body • Short-term effects: • Nervousness • Headaches • Heart rate increases • Blood pressure rises Nervous System • Long-term effects: • Increased risk of stroke due to decreased flow of oxygen to the brain

  10. Ways to Stay Alcohol/Tobacco Free Avoid situations where alcohol is present. Choose friends who are alcohol free. Use refusal skills. If the pressure continues, walk away Get help from a trusted adult if needed. Practice the S.T.O.P. strategy
