WASHplus Pilot Program Burkina Faso

This pilot program aims to identify and propose WASH interventions to eliminate or control trachoma, schistosomiasis, and soil-transmitted helminths in Burkina Faso. The project includes collaboration with government stakeholders, behavior change activities, and training for specific groups. Initial results show communities engaged and local officials committed to advancing WASH efforts.

Information and Advocacy • Targeted local provincial and district authorities • High commissioner of Gnagna province • Chief medical directors of Manni and Bogande • Provincial director of agriculture, water and sanitation, Gnagna • Provincial director of education, Gnagna • Commune president for each commune • Communities • 1689 people reached with information and advocacy

  9. Behavior Change Activities • Developed WASH-NTD integration tools • Trained and mobilized communities • Trained specific groups • Conducted Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) • Assisted mass drug administration efforts • Conducted a radio campaign to promote WASH-NTD messages

  13. Initial Results (2) • USAID CAs and other NGO partners seeking ways to support WASHplus initial efforts. • USAID/Burkina interested in project and will use ideas to develop new REGIS activity • FHI 360 developing a case study to share with NNN WASH working group at the September 2016 meeting

  14. Future Needs • Limited support to continue follow-up activities for an additional 6-12 months • Funding for an endline activity to provide more rigorous results (WASHPaLS?) • USAID participation in NNN WASH-NTD working group • Assistance to USAID/Burkina to include WASH in new RFA
