1. 16. Evolution Review • Essential Question: How does the evidence of geology, fossils, and comparative anatomy support the theory of evolution? • Learning Target: I can summarize the evidence for the theory of evolution. • Learning Task: I will demonstrate mastery by answering review questions with at least 80% accuracy.

8. Evolution Test ~ Study GuideAnswers to SELECTED Questions Part 1: Earth’s History

9. a fossil from a brief period of time but widely distributed around the earth; used to date rock layers • 2. What is an index fossil? Why are they important to the study of rock layers? • 3. What is an unconformity? Why might there be an unconformity in a formation of rock layers? An unconformity is a gap (missing layer) in the Fossil record. Usually the result of weathering or erosion of a layer of rock.

10. The oldest rocks lie on the bottom and the Youngest rocks are on top of any Undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rocks. • 4. What is the Law of Superposition? • 9. Consider the following examples, and decide if they represent relative dating or radioactive dating: • a. A fossil is 2.5 million years old _________________ • A trilobite fossil is older than a pelecypod fossil _________________________ • The earth is at least 4.5 billion years old _________ • A graptolite fossil is younger than a brachiopod _______________________ radioactive relative radioactive relative

11. Precambrian Era Cenozoic Era • 13. What is the oldest Era? ___________________ • What Era are we living in? ____________________ • 14. What is an ice core? What can they tell us? • 15. What is the relationship between geological and biological evolutionary theories? An ice core is a cylinder of ice removed from a glacier. They can show us that the climate changed at certain times in Earth’s history. They both provide evidence of change on Earth

12. Answers to SELECTED Questions Part 2: Natural Selection & Biological Evolution

13. 16. What are the 4 components of Natural Selection? • A. • B. • C. • D. Life is a struggle Variation (differences) among offspring Organisms over-produce (make lots of babies) The best adapted survive and reproduce

14. Charles Darwin • 17. Who developed the theory of Natural Selection? ______________________________ • 18. How does Natural Selection lead to evolution? • 19. Where did life on Earth most likely begin? • Circle the best answer: air volcanoes • oceans land Helpful traits accumulate (increase) among surviving members of the species

15. Test Practice • 20. The shaded areas of this diagram represent where fossils of a land-dwelling animal were found on the continents of South America and Africa. • What does this evidence suggest? • A The animals swam from one continent to the other. • B The two continents were once connected by a land bridge. • C The animals developed on the two continents at the same time. • D The two continents were once joined as part of a larger continent.

16. 21. A layer of marine fossils is discovered in a desert environment. Which hypothesis best explains the discovery? • A The area was once covered by water. • B Volcanic activity once occurred in the area. • C A catastrophic event once occurred in the area. • D Erosion turned most of the limestone in the area into sand.

17. 22. Fossils of warm-weather plants were found on an island in the Arctic Ocean. What can best be concluded from this discovery? • A Spores of plants drifted by air currents to the island. • B Ocean currents carried the plants to the island. • C The island drifted from a tropical region to its present location. • D Seeds of plants have been carried to the island by migratory birds.

18. 23. Which theory best describes how an asteroid striking Earth may have caused the extinction of dinosaurs? • A Heat from the asteroid caused massive fires that reduced the food supply. • B Dense clouds formed following the collision, causing a global drop in temperature. • C Land masses were altered by the collision, reducing the space where dinosaurs could roam for food. • D Glaciers melted rapidly from heat produced by the asteroid, causing floods that destroyed dinosaurs’ habitats.

19. 24. This diagram shows a cross section of land that has not been overturned and includes a fossil. • What can be concluded about the age of the fossil? • A It is younger than the shale. • B It is older than the shale. • C It is older than the sandstone. • D It is younger than the sandstone.

20. 25. Which best explains how geologic time scales can help scientists study the evolution of life on Earth? • A They describe the existence of rocks before there was life on Earth. • B They show that geological features have evolved at the same rate as organisms. • C They compare the life histories of species that have used rocks as habitats. • D They correlate the existence of life on Earth with geological events.

21. 26. Which statement supports the theory of evolution? • A All living cells come from previous cells. • B All plants and animals have DNA. • C Matter cannot be created or destroyed during chemical reactions. • D Fossils provide evidence that vertebrates share a common ancestor.
