  1. Subjunctive 5 There will be consequences

  2. The story so far… • cum Mossmanus discipulos doceret. • Mossmanus clamavit ut discipuli audirent. • tum Mossmanus discipulis imperavit ut audirent. • discipuli rogaverunt cur Mossmanus clamaret.

  3. Bob was so handsome that all the girls loved him. Mossmanus was so tall that he banged his head. WHAT DO THESE SENTENCE HAVE IN COMMON? They tell you the consequence or RESULT of something. These are called RESULT CLAUSES

  4. So how do I spot one in Latin? • Look for a SO word, such as TAM / TOT / ADEO / TANTUS SO / SO many / SO (much) / SO great • Look for our old friend • UT • Look for a subjunctive – rem/res/ ret etc

  5. An example Bobus tam fortis erat ut hostes fugerent There is the SO word There is the subjunctive There is UT Bobus was so brave that the enemy fled Most importantly note that UT in a RESULT clause is translated as THAT

  6. Some examples • tantuseratclamorutnemoverbaregisaudiret. • gladiator spectatoresadeodelectavitutiterumiterumqueplauderent. • tam benignuseratutomnesciveseumamarent. • tot vulneraacceperamutmedicus de vita meadesperaret. • tantaeratnubesutpastoressolemvidere non possent.

  7. Behold a subjunctive! Is there an UT? NO! Is there a SO word? If so it is a RESULTClause – UT = THAT Is there a CUM? YES! Cum = when/since No? Is there a questioning word? Is there an ordering verb? = INDIRECT COMMAND – ut = to If none of these = PURPOSE CLAUSE – UT = so that NO INDIRECT QUESTION
