Parts of a Book • Title: Name of the book • Author: Person who writes the book • Publisher: Company who prints the book • Illustrator: Person who draws the picture for a book • Preface: Introduction to the book • Table of Contents: List of chapters with their page numbers • Appendix: Extra information put near the end of a book • Glossary: Alphabetical list of definitions and pronunciations of special or unusual words • Index: Alphabetical list of topics and their page numbers placed at the very end of a book • Text: Main part of the book written by the author • Title page: First page of a book which tells the title, author, illustrator, and publisher • Bibliography: List of other books to read

  8. News Article • News: These articles tell about events that just happened. They may include articles of local, national, or world interest. They are written to inform.

  9. Feature Article • Features: These articles are detailed reports on a person, an issue, or an event. They are written to inform and entertain.

  10. Editorial • Editorials: The people who run the newspaper give their opinions on an important issue. You can also write a letter to them telling them what you think! They are written to persuade.

  11. Sports Article • Sports: These articles provide information on games and players. You can find out who got traded to the Yankees or Mets, or look up who won yesterday’s high school soccer game. They are written to inform and entertain.

  12. Weather Report • Weather: This section provides forecasts and reports on weather conditions both locally and nationally. It will have maps and charts. It will help you to decide whether to plan that trip to Coney Island! It is written to inform.

  13. Entertainment Section • Entertainment: Here you will find TV listings, information on what movies are playing at the local theatre, comics, crossword puzzles, and articles on your favorite “stars”. It is written to entertain and to inform.

  14. The Classifieds • Classifieds: Here you can find something you want to buy, or you can advertise something you want to sell. You can also find jobs and apartments for rent here too! It is written to inform.

  15. Reading A Newspaper Article • 1. Read the Title • 2. Read the first paragraph. • 3. If you feel that the article has information you need, continue to read the rest of the article. Note: The first paragraph of a news article usually includes the 5Ws (Who, What, When, Where, Why) Note: A News Article is written from most important to least important.
