  1. IMPENDING DOOM? WHAT CAN AN IMPENDING DOOM, LIKE DEATH, DO TO YOU, SAYS HEIDEGGER? MAN LOSES HIS POTENTIALITY (CARE/ FUTURE PLANS IN LIFE) FOR BEING

  2. HEIDEGGER'S PHENOMENOLOGY OF DEATH PHENOMENON ? EVENT/ EXPERIENCE PHENOMENOLOGY MANIFESTATION OF THE EVENT

  3. THE POSSIBILITY OF MY ABSOLUTE IMPOSSIBILITY BEING THROWN IN THE WORLD Alongside with things (concern/ care) INAUTHENTIC DASEIN Dasein Being with others (solicitude) AUTHENTIC DASEIN NON-RELATIONAL FREEDOM FROM THE “THEY”

  4. BEING THROWN IN THE WORLD TO EXIST = ACTUALIZATION OF POTENTIALS BEING TOO ABSORBED ON THINGS & PEOPLE Alongside with things (concern/ care) THE AHEAD OF ITSELF OF DASEIN = FUTURE PLANS

  5. Alongside with things (concern/ care) RESULTS TO IGNORANCE OF DEATH TO BE ENGROSSED ON IMMEDIATE CONCERN ON THINGS

  6. DEATH LOST OF “THERENESS” WE LOSE OUR POTENTIALITIES THE POSSIBILITY OF BEING “CUT” OFF FROM OTHERS & THINGS (CARE) IT IS A MUST AND IT IS NECESSARY = I CANNOT ESCAPE IT THE POSSIBILITY OF MY ABSOLUTE IMPOSSIBILITY ANXIETY = DREAD = INDETERMINATE FEAR IS DETERMINATE

  7. HEIDEGGER'S PHENOMENOLOGY OF DEATH CAN WE EXPERIENCE THE TRANSITION FROM DASEIN TO NON-DASEIN?

  8. “THEY” OUR FIRST EXPERIENCE OF DEATH? DEATH OF OTHERS We never experienced the death of another as he himself experienced it DEATH IS ALWAYS MINE

  9. “THEY” CAUSES INAUTHENTICITY TO DASEIN HIDES DEATH DEATH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH US SOMETHING NOT YET AT HAND OFFERS NO THREAT INAUTHENTIC DASEIN MAN LOSES HIMSELF TO THE “THEY”

  10. INAUTHENTIC DASEIN? GIVING NEW EXPLANATION TO THE POSSIBLE IMPOSSIBLITY TO DENY WHAT IS CERTAIN AMBIGUOUS ATTITUDE OF THE “THEY”

  11. BEING TOWARDS DEATH AND CARE • Existence, in the ‘ahead-of-itself’ • Facticity, in the ‘being-already-in’ • Falling, in the ‘being-alongside’ • EVERYDAY BEING-TOWARDS-DEATH-INAUTHENTICITY • AUTHENTIC BEING TOWARDS DEATH

  12. BEING TOWARDS DEATH AND CARE • Care has the following characteristics of Dasein’s being • Existence, in the ‘ahead-of-itself’ (FUTURE) • Death as something impending: • the possibility of being cut off from others and from things. • something that I cannot outstrip • Facticity, in the ‘being-already-in’ (PRESENT) • revealed only in the basic mood of man = anxiety (indeterminate) • Falling, in the ‘being-alongside’ (FUTURE) • Many are ignorant of death • Fleeing in the face of death: concealment

  13. ANNIE NIELSEN: BEING TOWARDS DEATH AND CARE • Existence, in the ‘ahead-of-itself’? • Facticity, in the ‘being-already-in’? • Falling, in the ‘being-alongside’ ?

  14. EVERYDAY BEING-TOWARDS-DEATH-INAUTHENTICITY • The ‘they’: • hides death • not yet present-at-hand, • therefore offers no threat • Denial of certainty • He loses himself in the ‘they’ • Anxiety in the face of death is taken as a sign of : • weakness • man is constantly evading death

  15. AUTHENTIC-BEING-TOWARDS-DEATH • Response to death • Not evasion as imposed by the ‘they’ • Facing this possibility of death = SUICIDE? • Facing is not actualizing! • suicide demolishes all the potentialities of man • Authentic means: • Anticipation of death’s certainty • provide us with ‘vision’/ understanding • ‘carpe diem’ • Vision = present existence vs. potential possiblities • mind that is open to the constant threat of anxiety • What to do with the ‘they’? • death does not belong to everybody, but to one’s own self • Being-with-others (solicitude) • NON-RELATIONAL = SEPARATION FROM THE “THEY” = FREEDOM TO BE WHATEVER HE WANTS TO BE

  16. KARL ROHNER’S NOTION OF DEATH AUTHENTIC SELF TO ACCEPT OR REFUSE OPEN TO TRANSCENDENCE END OF DESIRES (CONCUPISCENCE) DEATH = FINALITY ON ENDLESS POTENTIAL INDETERMINATE MISTAKES = FUTURE EMBRACING THE ULTIMATE GOOD
