  3. After WWII (September 2, 1945) majordevelopmentsoccurred in thefield of educationaltechnology. Therewasanemphasison audiovisual communications media thatlaterturnedit’sfocusonteaching and learning procedureswhichwerebased in behavioralpsychology.

  4. Donald Kirkpatrick is the creator of the Kirkpatrick Model. A training evaluation model that was developed in the writing of his Ph.D. dissertation in 1954, “Evaluating a Human Relations Training Program for Supervisors”. He specifically developed his model for training evaluation programs with the following levels: reaction, learning, behavior, and results.

  5. Burrhus Frederic Skinner (1904-1990) an American psychologist, behaviorist, author, inventor, and social philosopher. In 1958 he promoted the use of “Teaching Machines” to enable students to move at their individual pace. He also wrote extensively on improvements of teachings based on his analysis of “Verbal Behavior”.

  6. In 1960 PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) the first computer assisted instruction (CAI) system was built in the University of Illinois.

  7. In 1963 the Department of Audiovisual Instruction located in Washington, DC (later known as AECT) approved the first definition of educational technology: “the design and use of messages which control the learning process”.

  8. Robert Mills Gagne (1916-2002) was an American educational psychologist best known for his “Conditions of Learning” published in 1965. The Gagne assumption that different types of learning exist, and that different instructional conditions are most likely to bring about these different types of learning.

  9. Richard Atkinson and Richard Shriffin in 1968 both proposed a multistage, multistore theory of memory that is generally regarded as the basis for information processing theory. It is a model of memory that can be broken down into sub-models of memory: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.

  10. ARPANET In 1969 ARPANET was created for the military but quickly became adopted by institutes of higher learning for sharing files. It would later evolve into the world wide web or internet.

  11. ADDIE first appeared in 1975 and was created by the Center for Educational Technology at Florida State University for the U.S. Army. It is a guideline for creating effective training and support tools in five stages.

  12. In 2008 AECT presented a new definition of the field of educational technology as follows: Educational technology is the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources.
