  2. What is BC Electronic Library Network? • Consortium of 30 post-secondary libraries • Universities, colleges, technical institutes • University of British Columbia • Nicola Valley Institute of Technology • Langara College

  3. What is OutLook OnLine? • A service shared by BC’s public and post-secondary libraries • 93 libraries • Union databases • Records are merged • One search / all libraries’ results together • Portal to BC Libraries via Z39.50 • One search / separate results sets

  4. The BC Union Databases • OutLook OnLine - public & post-secondary • Close to 3 million bib records • Over 7 million holdings • ELN Serials - post-secondary & VPL • 175,000 bib records • 295,000 holdings • ELN Media - post-secondary • 150,000 bib records • 200,000 holdings

  5. Cataloguing & the BC union databases • Find BC materials • Share cataloguing with resource-sharing partners • Importance of standard numbers - key for matching: • ISBN • ISSN • LCCN

Importance of standard numbers • ISBN & ISSN are used to match records for the union databases • ISBN is used to look up shelf status for books by Z39.50 in OutLook • ISSN is used by link resolvers to match citation and fulltext for journal articles • Number matches are more accurate than title / author

  8. Search Options • Keyword • Can specify ISBN, ISSN, title, author • Browse • Alphabetical browse - union databases only • Advanced • Boolean options

  11. View Full Record • Click on a title to view the full record • Note display format: 3 options - labelled, MARC, card • Default for ELNN is MARC

  12. Add to cart • Click Add to Cart • Note Cataloguing option on left hand side

  13. Cataloguing Menu • Download Record (download one bib record at a time) • Add to Cart • View Cart • Add Locations (not applicable)

  14. View Cart • View Cart • Can Download, or Continue Searching & Adding to Cart • Note: Empty List - cart stays after downloading until emptied

  15. New Search • Note: “View my Cart” on right hand side of screen

  16. Empty List • Click “View My Cart” • Download Record • Bib record is now in MARC format on your desktop • Import into your ILS (Integrated Library System) • Empty List
