  2. Ratification • Official approval by the people of the Constitution • First state to ratify was Delaware in Dec 1787 • Only 9 needed to pass

  3. Federalist Papers • Written by Alexander Hamilton (NY) were 85 essays in favor and defense of the Constitution. Published in NY newspapers. (The author was kept secret until 1804)

  4. Federalists • Believed these things would prevent a tyrant from taking power: • Division of power – 3 branches & Federalism • Checks and balances

  5. Anti Federalists • Feared a centralized authority • Thought government would only serve the wealthy minority and ignore the majority

  6. Compromise • Bill of Rights! • First 10 amendments to the Constitution to protect peoples’ rights will be written. • State reps to approve constitution now.

  7. Federalists vs. Anti-Federalists • Hamilton • Washington • Franklin • Madison • People who lived in urban areas, skilled workers and merchants/North • Small states • Patrick Henry • Sam Adams • Rural area/South • Large states • States rights
