Federalist or Anti-Federalist – You decide. • “You ought to be extremely cautious, watchful, jealous of your liberty; for instead of securing your rights, you may lose them forever.” • “Tis really astonishing that the same people who have just emerged from a long and cruel war in defense of liberty, should agree to fix an elective despotism [dictatorship] upon themselves and posterity.” • “They divided the powers, that each branch might be a check upon the other, and I presume that every reasonable man will agree to it.” • “In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: You must first enable to government to control the governed; and in the next place, oblige it to control itself.” • “I like the general idea of framing a government, which should go on itself, peaceably, without needing a continual recurrence to the State legislatures….I will now tell you what I do not like. First the omission of a bill of rights….” • What would make the Anti-Federalists happy and likely to support the Constitution?
