  2. Overview • Algerian born American radiologist and medical researcher • 15th director of the National Institutes of Health, appointed by George W. Bush in May 2002 • He served for 6 years, stepping down in October,2008.

  3. Background • resident of Pasadena, Maryland, Zerhouni is of Algerian descent • Born in Nedroma in Tlemcen Province • was a competitive swimmer during his teens and speaks both Arabic and French fluently • He emigrated to the United States at 24 after earning his MD at the University of Algiers School of Medicine in 1975 • married to Nadia Azza (a pediatrician); children: three.

John Hopkins • compledhis residency in diagnostic radiology at Johns Hopkins in 1978 • Zerhouniwent on to serve as Executive Vice-Dean of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. • His MRI division's imaging research led to major advances in CAT scanningand MRI • Zerhounifounded or co-founded 5 start up companies. • founded CIRS in 1982 where he served as founder and chairman for several years. • founded Advanced Medical Imaging in 1989 • co-inventor and co-founder of Biopsys Corporation • co-founded American Radiology Services and served as chairman and CEO of it until 2002 • co-inventor and co-founder of Surgivision, Inc. an MRI image guided surgery company.

Professional Life • In 1985: consultant to the White House under President Ronald Reagan • In 1988: consultant to the World Health Organization • Since 2000: member of the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine • He had served on the National Cancer Institute Board of Scientific Advisors from 1998-2002 • Since leaving the NIH, Zerhouni has been appointed to the boards of the Lasker Foundation, Research!America and the Mayo Clinic

NIH • He became director of the NIH in 2002 • Zerhouniled the nation’s medical research agency and oversaw NIH’s 27 institutes and centers, with more than 18,000 employees and a budget of $29.5 billion. • During his tenure at NIH, Dr. Zerhouni also led the effort to promote global health and global research. • accomplishments at the NIH also included the establishment of a research program into the problem of widespread obesity and supporting the reduction of healthcare disparities

  7. After NIH • In 2010, Zerhouni formed the Zerhouni Group, LLC, a global science and health consulting firm. • He has been a scientific advisor to Chief Executive Chris Viehbacher of Sanofi-Aventis since February 2009. • Named as their new head of research and development in December 2010

  8. Faith • “There is a clear belief in the Koran that through knowledge you can improve not just medicine, but the lot of man” • “My work in medicine and at NIH is profoundly connected to my belief in Islam.”

  9. Immigrant • "I think maybe part of my ability to succeed here is that I can bring a viewpoint that many people feel is sometimes surprisingly different and constructive in showing there is a different way," says Zerhouni. "I think being an immigrant enriches the mix.”
