Apartheid Origins • Racial supremacy and segregation have occurred since the first whites arrived in the 1600s • After WWII, Britain de-colonized South Africa • 1948: Nationalist party won election and formed a coalition government using the policy of Apartheid
Apartheid in South Africa • Officially lasted from 1948-1994 • Greatly prohibited “blacks,” “coloureds,” and “Asians” from equal rights • Sentenced many protestors to political exile • Caused international protest and dispute
Nelson Mandela • Joined African National Congress • Imprisoned for 5 years in 1962 and sentenced to hard labor • Sentenced to life in prison for “attempted” overthrow • Released in 1990 • Elected first black president of South Africa in 1994
African National Congress • ANC was established in 1912 • South African Left Wing Political Party in favor of ending Apartheid • Nelson Mandela became South African president in 1994 as a member of the ANC • ANC has not relinquished political power since the ending of Apatheid
Modern South Africa • International standing is much better • First African nation to host World Cup in 2010 • Still major issues of disease and racial tension • Still under ANC control
