  2. Apartheid? Means the legal separation of the races Was the law of South Africa from the creation of the state in 1948 Classified citizens as either black, colored, Asian, or white

  3. Apartheid Inequality White only made up 30 percent of the population But made ALL of the laws for the nonwhite majority This inequality lasted until the late 1980s

  4. Restrictions on Africans Blacks were allowed to own only a little land Segregation in schools, libraries, movie theatres, restaurants, and beaches People were not allowed to marry anyone who was of a different race

  5. Other Apartheid Legislation The government had the final say in what race you were Blacks and Coloreds were not allowed to live in White areas Education for Blacks and Coloreds was designed to disqualify them from getting “White” jobs

  6. Apartheid Opposition • Two groups fought to end apartheid in South Africa • The African National Congress • Led by Nelson Mandela • The Pan African Congress

  7. Riots and Prison Anti-apartheid riots took place constantly in South Africa Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison for his work against the regime Despite Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment, the riots continued

  9. The End of Apartheid South Africa realized apartheid had no place in the modern world In 1990, South African President F.W. de Klerk allowed the African National Congress to operate as a legal party He also released Nelson Mandela from prison after 27 years

  10. Towards Equality De Klerk began to repeal apartheid laws 1994, South Africa held it’s first multi-racial election African National Congress won the most delegates Nelson Mandela was chosen South Africa’s first black president

  11. Mandela’s Vision for S.A. Mandela wasn’t bitter about being jailed His first goal was to get the races of South Africa working together and Try to overcome the hatred that had grown during apartheid
