CONNECTING TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD TO SOCIETY TODAY • One of the biggest proofs we have that racism has gotten better in the past century is the fact that the U.S. (one of the most powerful countries in the world) now has a black president. • However, having a black president may often lead to the false impression that racism is no longer present in the lives of U.S. citizens.
CONNECTING TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD TO SOCIETY TODAY • After Obama's election, two images of America appeared: 1. An accepting America that threw off its long history of slavery, segregation and discrimination to lead an African American to the White House. 2. A reactionary (or “backward-looking”) America that responded to the election of the first black president with racist slogans, hanging imitations and other images of our country's most shameful and painful memories.
CONNECTING TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD TO SOCIETY TODAY • Today, the U.S. is somewhere between these poles of hope and fear. Today, most people shun open racism when they recognize it. Yet our lives are far from post-racial: segregation and bias live on in many forms.
