Background • National and local skill shortage • Derwent New Deal for Communities area & Establishment of Derwent Builds • Commercial Services – skills shortage and recruitment issues • Derby Homes – customer service and appointments for different trades • Sustainability of Derwent area a concern

Positive Action… • Decided in mid 2003 to combine resources to tackle this problem • Partnership working & joined-up thinking • Agreed focus on training people from Derwent area to meet this skills shortage • Time spent speaking to local people and promoting interest – Blue Boy Pub! • Funding approved from Derby City Council, Derby Homes and Derwent Builds (combination of ESF & NDC funding)

  8. Recruitment… • Trainees recruited solely from Derwent Area – April 2004 • 8 recruited – 4 male, 4 female • Team Working • Work pattern agreed – Derby Homes vacant properties • College training

  9. Inter Agency Involvement. Delivery and assessment staff. Providers and industry standards organisations. Partners and Supply chain Organisations. Training Co-ordinator. Supply Chain Coordinator. Administrator. Practical Trainers & work based recorders. Social Support staff & Funding researchers Funding, inclusion and support organisations.

  10. Implementation & Milestones • For 2004 • Maintain and excel on submitted KPI’s for Intermediate Labour Market Project. (See accompanying documentation for key dates and programme). • Commence Maintenance sector training pilot in partnership with CITB/Derby College and Derby homes (registered as Housing Forum/CITB demonstration project). Service Level agreement currently under Construction for March commencement. • Recruit and promote for NVQ level II Demolition in partnership with CITB and Local demolition contractor. Underway. • Act as managing contractor on Refurbishment project with primary local labour and integrated supply chain objectives. Commences March 2003. Innovative procurement underway. • Act as social inclusion and local labour nominated facilitator on community NHS trust New Build promoting Integrated Project team philosophies. Initial workshops commence January 2004. • Integrate NVQ,ESF,CITB, and IiP frameworks into one recording and feedback system. To be completed by end February 2004. • Act as Nominated facilitator for community self build in conjunction with major contractor and regional hosing association for ‘train and build’ project. Currently in Bidding process via Derby Council Land sale

Meeting the Housing Forum’s Key Recommendations • Clear job descriptions, equal opportunity policy, monitoring system should be basis of recruitment and promotion • Targets linked to assessment of applicants future potential • Develop links with CITB and local colleges – all staff to have CSCS cards
