  2. What is Leadership? • “Leadership is helping a community make progress or solve a problem.” • What problems face your communities?

  3. WHY INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP? • What country is your shirt from? Have someone look at the label on your shirt and find where it was manufactured.

  4. WHY INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP? • Manufacturing – More than 5 million manufacturing jobs have moved overseas in the last 30 years • Economy - Half of U.S. Debt owned by foreign countries • Energy - Nearly 60% of US oil supply imported from abroad • Public Health – Swine Flu (Asia-Mexico-US) • Immigration – 36% of NYC residents foreign born

  5. Authority is not Leadership • What is the difference between authority and leadership? • What is the role of the Silverback Gorilla? • The role of authority is to keep order, keep the community safe, and provide direction

  6. 3 Levels of Leadership 1) Self – Traits to help your community solve its problem 2) Other – Skills to effectively work with others 3) System – Knowledge about the problem and how things work in the community
