  1. SENIORS Course Selection for 2014-2015

  2. Mandatory Appointments • You have two separate, mandatory appointment times • The one on top is with Mr. Prater, our College and Career Specialist • The one stamped on your transcript is your appointment time with your counselor to place your course requests for the 2014-2015 school year

Course Selection Appointments • Appointment date/time with your counselor is listed on your transcript • Appointments last about 5 minutes each • BE ON TIME! • Have your form filled out completely with all necessary signatures • If you do not turn in a course selection form, we will create a schedule for you • The Course Selection Guide is on the SPHS website • Descriptions of courses • Explanation of prerequisites or co-requisites

  4. During your appointment time… • You will turn in your completed 4-year plan • AND you will turn in your course requests for next year:

  5. Graduation Requirements • English • 4 years in sequence (9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th) • Social Studies • 4 credits (required: W. History, US History 10 and 11, Gov/Econ) • Math • 4 credits (must include: Alg I, Geometry, Alg II) • Science • 4 credits (must include: Biology and either Active Physical Science or Chemistry) • 1 year of PE • ½ credit of Health • 1 year of a Fine Art • Either 1 year of BTA, one semester of Computer Apps, or a passing score on the Computer Lit Test • 24 minimum credits

Diploma Endorsements: Advanced Academic • At least two (2.0) credits of a foreign language in the same language • Science credits that must include at least one (1.0) credit of Chemistry or Physics • Math credits that must include at least one (1.0) credit of Algebra 2 with Trigonometry • A minimum of 26.0 earned total credits

  7. Diploma Endorsements:HCS Seal of Scholastic Excellence • At least four (4.0) credits that meet one of the following criteria: • Two (2.0) credits of a foreign language in the same language and two (2.0) credits in a college-level course (i.e., Advanced Placement, or Dual Enrollment classes) • Three (3.0) credits of a foreign language in the same language and one (1.0) credit in a college-level course (i.e., AP or Dual Enrollment) • At least two (2.0) credits of science that meet one of the following criteria: • One (1.0) credit in Chemistry and one (1.0) credit in Physics OR • One (1.0) credit in Chemistry and one (1.0) credit in an AP science course • At least one (1.0) credit in math at the Pre-Calculus level • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher • A minimum of 28 earned total credits

Additional Diploma Endorsements • Alabama Career Technical Education Endorsement • At least three (3.0) credits in a sequenced Career Technical Education program of study • A minimum of 24.0 earned total credits • Alabama Advanced Career Technical Education Endorsement • At least three (3.0) credits in a sequenced Career Technical Education program of study • Math credits that must include at least one (1.0) credit in Algebra 2 with Trigonometry • A minimum of 24.0 earned total credits

Additional Forms You May Need to Bring to Your Course Selection Appointment: • AP Contract • If you are taking an AP course, you and your parents must sign an AP contract form • Override Letters • If your teacher or counselor doesn’t recommend for you to take a course, then you and your parents will have to sign an override letter. This letter will remain on file with your counselor. **All of these forms will be in the Guidance Office. If you need either of these forms, you MUST bring the completed and signed form with you to your appointment.

English • English 12 • AP English Literature 12 • You MUST get the signature of your current English teacher for approval • You will be required to take the AP exam in May • Dual Enrollment English 101/102 • Through Jeff State Community College • Requires at least a 3.0 GPA • You MUST get the signature of your current English teacher for approval • You must also have an ACT English sub-score of at least 20, OR pass the COMPASS placement test at JSCC

History Regular Option Advanced Placement Option • US Government (semester) AND • Economics (semester) • AP US Government (semester) • You MUST get the signature of your current history teacher for approval • You will be required to take the AP exam in May • AP Macro Economics (semester) • You MUST get the signature of your current history teacher for approval • You will be required to take the AP exam in May

Electives • Please check the Course Selection Guide on the SPHS website for a full list of elective descriptions. • Elective descriptions may be spread out throughout the Course Selection Guide depending on the course content (i.e., AP Human Geography is listed in the History section) • Some of them require pre-requisites or teacher signatures so look CLOSELY

You MUST speak with these teachers if you wish to take any of these classes

SENIOR RELEASE: REQUIREMENTS • On track for the Advanced Academic Diploma • May be released for up to two elective periods per day (either late arrival or early departure) • 2.50 MINIMUM GPA • No more than 3 unexcused absences or discipline referrals the previous semester • You MUST be using the release time to further your personal educational goals in at least one of the following ways: • Participating in private instruction in academic, athletic, or artistic pursuits • Working in a paid job or internship opportunity related to future career goals • Volunteering for a community service agency

Pick up an application in Guidance BEFORE your Course Selection appointment time • Fill out ALL parts of the form • Don’t forget to fill out the “rationale for requesting release time” section—VERY IMPORTANT!!!!! • Bring the completed form to your course selection appointment • Dr. Jarnagin has final approval

Zero Period Available Classes: Additional Information: • Pre-Calculus • Algebra 2 w/ Trig • English 12 • English 12 Dual Enrollment • Senior EMT (Health Science Academy) • Fashion (either 1 or 2) • AP Government/AP Economics • Jazz Band • Busses will NOT run during this time so you must have a ride or drive • You cannot remain on campus after your classes are finished for the day • You have the option to take 8 courses if you would like • Your parent’s signature on your course request sheet is their approval for your zero period class

Alternate Electives • You MUST choose 2 alternate electives • They cannot be electives that require an interview/application process • You also must make sure that you meet the pre-requisites for the course (if necessary) • Why do I have to choose alternate electives? • A course you chose won’t fit in your schedule (this happens OFTEN!) • A course you chose doesn’t “make” and we will no longer offer it • A course you chose is full • You make or do not make a team/elective required by try-outs Remember… while you are out for the summer, we are here working on your schedules! Please help us by giving us a few options you would be OK with in the event that one of these situations happens with your schedule!

Final Reminders… • Don’t forget to have a parent initial your 4 Year Plan and sign your Course Request sheets– it is State Mandated to have a parent signature on file! • Don’t forget to make sure you have 2 alternate electives on your Course Request sheet • If you want to do Senior Release, be sure you bring the completed form to your course selection appointment! • Remember that you have 2 mandatory appointments coming up—one with Mr. Prater, and one with your counselor! Please be on time!
