  2. Interface Design Challenges • Creating a sense of presence through light • Using light as the primary medium creates a temporal, ethereal, yet highly tangible presence • To convert a physical touch to a luminous glow • Allowing users to create their own languages through patterns of light

Technology: Current • A PIC based circuit board acts as the local monitor and controller for each frame • This board converts the analogue data from the frame and sends it to a Java application via a serial port • Within the application rests the primary logic, which allows customization of how the frame functions (including fade time, color relations, shared color mixing, intensities, etc.)

  5. Technology: Proposed • The frames will eventually use a wireless communications system to some extent: locally wireless to an Ethernet terminal or perhaps globally wireless • Better presence detection system, including detection of the specific person who is assigned to the frame • Social networks of frames? • Spatial connections?
