  2. Self-Esteem Is a measure of how much you value, respect, and feel confident about yourself

  3. High Self-Esteem • Speaks up for self • Respects self and others • Has confidence • Tries new things • Feels valuable to society • Adjusts to change • Feels optimistic • Makes decisions based on values

  4. Low Self-esteem • Feels insecure • Disrespects self and others • Vulnerable to peer pressure • Doesn’t feel valuable • Feels depressed • Fears failure • Uses drugs and alcohol • Feels pessimistic • Behaves destructively

  5. Improving Your Self-Esteem • Use Positive Self-Talk • Act with Integrity • Choose Supportive Friends • Accept Yourself

  6. Emotions • Love- the feeling of strong affection or caring for another person • Happiness- the feeling of joy and well-being or contentment • Humor- expressing negative emotions in a positive way • Optimism- feeling that life experiences and outcomes will be positive

  7. FEAR The feeling of present danger Managing Fear: - say things to yourself in order to view the fear more logically or reasonably - rearrange your environment to manage the fear

  8. ANGER The strong feeling of irritation towards a subject Managing Anger: - Channel emotions appropriately - Talk with the person you are angry with - Do something physical to release anger

  9. GUILT The feeling you get when you have done something wrong or you are responsible for something bad happening Managing Guilt: - consider your source of guilt - fix the problem if possible

  10. Depression The feeling of anxiety, loneliness, and despair Symptoms: - Sleeping too much - Feeling tired throughout or too little the day - Loss of appetite - Lack of concentration - Loss of energy - Withdrawal from a group Managing Depression: - identify why you feel the way you do - put things in prospective
