Greenbrier Native Plant Garden on the Monongahela National Forest Title text here 2010 Accomplishments The Greenbrier Ranger District native pollinator garden was abuzz with activity this year, and not just from the pollinators. We worked very closely with an AmeriCorps Vista holding a landscape architect degree. She designed our front ‘island’ garden to mimic a native grassland and bordering forested area. Fifteen new species were added to this forested area, including swamp sunflower, New England aster, blazing star, serviceberry and dogwood while the grassland was planted with native warm season grasses. A stone walkway was installed between the two areas, using stone from a local source. A new waterline installed for the administrative site caused a setback to the garden, but everyone pitched in and got things back on track. We had a host of volunteers, including several AmeriCorps folks, Master Gardeners from the community, a Student Conservation Association trail crew and a high school student that we sponsored through a local agency Summer Youth program. Alderson Plant Materials Center grew several new species for the garden including ironweed, blazing star, flowering raspberry and elderberry. District employees also collected more seed for Alderson to germinate for next year’s plantings. These exciting new additions will be black-eyed susans, bee balm, closed gentians, native sunflowers, lobelia and turks’ cap lilies. Also planned for next year is the creation of several activity areas, like a stage and a messy materials area and the installation of our new garden sign informing the public of the importance of native plants.
