Starting word • When Word is launched, the program opens with a blank document. • The blinking insertion point in the upper-left corner of this document is where you will begin creating your text. • When you place your cursor near it, the insertion point changes to a large “I,” which is called the I-beam.

  4. The Ribbon!

  5. USE the document that is open from the previous exercise. Key mini toolbar and drag the mouse pointer over the word “toolbar” to select it. Notice that a faint image of the Mini toolbar appears once the word is selected, as above. Point to the Font command on the Mini toolbar. Notice the toolbar brightens. Click the drop-down arrow on the Font command box. A font menu appears. Press Esc twice to exit the command box and close the Mini toolbar. Step-by-Step: Use the Mini Toolbar

Step-by-Step: Use the Mini Toolbar • Now, position the insertion point on the selected text and right-click; the Mini toolbar appears, accompanied by a shortcut menu that displays a variety of commonly used commands as shown at right. • Click in a blank part of the document, then drag the mouse pointer over the text you typed at the beginning of the exercise. Finally, press the Deletekey to remove the text. • Leave the document open to use in the next exercise.

  9. Step-by-Step: Use the Quick Access Toolbar • Click the drop-down arrow at the Customize Quick Access Toolbarbutton. A menu appears, as shown at right. • Click Show Below the Ribbon. The toolbar is moved. • Click the drop-down arrow at the Customize Quick Access Toolbar button again. Click Show Above the Ribbon to return the toolbar to its original position. .

KeyTips • In Word 2010,KeyTipsreplace some keyboard shortcuts used in previous versions of Word. • Every command on the Ribbon and the Quick Access Toolbar has a KeyTip. • To display KeyTips, press the Alt key; KeyTips then appear as small letters and numbers hovering over their associated commands. • The small square labels that contain this information are called badges. In this exercise, you learn to display and use KeyTips.

  12. Step-by-Step: Using KeyTips • USE the document that is open from the previous exercise. • Press the Alt key. KeyTipsappear on the Ribbon and Quick Access Toolbar to let you know which key to use to access specific commands or tabs. • Press H to activate the Home tab. • Press A for alignment, then C to center the insertion point. • Press the Alt key again.
