  3. AUSTRALIA – location and borders, climate, geography LOCATION AND BORDERS Australia • Australia is an insular(ostrovní) continent. It lies south-east offAsia. It covers the area of about 7 700 000 sq. kilometres. Australia is almost as large as the USA. The eastern coast of Australia is washed by the Pacific Ocean and the west coast by the Indian. • Tasmania lies 240 km south. • Nearest is Indonesia, Papua New Guinea in the north. • Fiji is in the east and New Zealand is south-east off Australia.

  5. AUSTRALIA – location and borders, climate, geography CLIMATE • It´s a very dry continent with little rain (s malýmmnožstvímdeště) and some areas are completely dry. A majority of people lives on the south-east coast. • This continent has the least mountains and it is the driest continent in the whole word. The deserts cover one third of the surface of Australia. • The climate changes according to the altitude(nadmořskévýšky). The coldest weather is in the mountains, in the south-east and in Tasmania. It regularly snows at these places.

AUSTRALIA – location and borders, climate, geography CLIMATE • The weather in the North is hot because it is near the equator(rovník). • The warmest period of the year is in January and February. • In the central and western parts of Australia, there are long periods of dry weather. Sometimes there are floods(povodně) and typhoons(tajfuny) on the north-west and east coasts. GEOGRAPHY • Australia is the smallest, youngest continent, with the lowest population densityand lying in the Southern Hemisphere between the Indian and the Pacific Oceans.

SURFACE • Nearly half of the continent occupies theGreat Western Plateau on the west, in central part there are also three big deserts - the Great Sandy Desert, the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert.

AUSTRALIA – location and borders, climate, geography GEOGRAPHY SURFACE • The Central Lowlands are mostly covered by tropic forests and savannah with occasional creeks and rivers which become dry in the dry seasons as well as three large lakes - Lake Eyre, Lake Torrens and Lake Gairdner. • On the north-east coast there is the Great Barrier Reef - it is the largest coral reef(útes) in the world. RIVERS • Many of Australian´s rivers are filled with water only during the rainy season. Also most of Australian´s lakes are dry for months.

Its length is 3780 kilometres. • Most rivers are small and they dry up(vysychají) because there is not enough rain. MOUNTAINS • East part occupies the Great Dividing Range and in the south-east there are the Australian Alps with the highest mountain Mount Kasciusco. Its height is 2230 m.
