  1. 2009 Exhibition of School Planning and Architecture Hillside Elementary School New Richmond, Wisconsin Elementary School Project of Distinction – New construction ATS&R Planners/Architects/Engineers

  2. Hillside Elementary School The new 85,750 square foot elementary school houses 600 students in grades K-5.

  3. Community Environment: The School District of New Richmond, engaged the community in the planning and design of the new Hillside Elementary School. ATS&R organized meetings with the district administrative team to identify key topics in order to keep community meetings focused and consistent. The community was asked to identify critical success factors for the community. Key issues, ideas, priorities, feedback, and questions were documented for the group to consider and validate. Educational and facilities parameters were established to assure a fit between facility functional needs and a finite operating budget. Through these meetings, it was clear that sustainability and green construction were one of the most important issues in the design of this new elementary school. The administrative offices offer a comfortable working area for staff, a controlled visitor entrance, and passive supervision.

  4. Learning Environment: To provide the best possible learning environment, natural light and healthy indoor air were imperative in the design. Native materials and colors found in nature were used throughout the interior to provide comfortable spaces for students and staff alike. The three-wing design supports learning communities and allows the district to arrange grade groupings in a variety ways. Interactive white board technology was integrated into the design to allow teachers access to new learning techniques. The facility was designed with both internal flexibility (variety of learning spaces, small and large) and the ability to expand outward from each wing. A spacious art room integrates Smart Board technology.

  5. Physical Environment: Designed for “Green Construction,” the small environmental footprint of the new school incorporates many features and elements that lead to sustainability in design such as: • Protecting the downstream wetlands during construction • Capturing runoff in temporary holding basins with a “treatment train” to provide clean water run-off • Using integrally colored concrete floor slabs that were ground and highly polished to serve as finish flooring in the classrooms and corridors • Installing highly durable and low maintenance surfaces that require minimal use of cleaning agents • Incorporating water saving features such as low flow water saver faucets and dual level flush valve toilets • Minimizing energy consumption with automated lighting, occupancy sensors, variable air volume systems, and use of daylight throughout the facility • Installing high energy insulated windows that reduce heating and cool costs Sustainable qualities, timeless design, and efficiency make Hillside Elementary School a source of community pride. The cafeteria reflects the use of highly durable, low maintenance surfaces, which were incorporated throughout the school.

  6. Planning Process: Working with the School District of New Richmond, their steering committee and community groups, ATS&R designed the 85,750 square foot facility to meet the needs of students, staff, and community members. Design reviews and staff presentations were performed at regular intervals throughout the project to ensure that the design was consistent with community and school district goals and that sustainability efforts, identified as one of the important goals of this project, were being met. The elementary school boasts state-of-the-art technology with enhanced computer labs, data networks, and security systems.
