  10. Identify one positive thing about the UG ME program that should be maintained in the future • There is a really good community among everyone here – students and faculty • Good faculty interaction. • Relationships between professors and students. • The open-door policy [2] – it really helps to be able to talk to the profs anytime we need help. • Caring faculty, the professors that know everyone’s names and always say hi • Teachers are very knowledgeable and prepare you very well • Most teachers make themselves easily available to help students. This makes the whole learning experience better and less frustrating • Most of the staff truly cares about their students and helping them learn. They put a lot of effort into each class and give them extra opportunities to ask questions and learn further. • The staff made everything very enjoyable • The interaction between professors and students. Some of the profs work hard to learn people’s names and treat us like professionals. • Dr. Bayless should continue to teach the ME388 class. He expects much from students but we learn a lot. • Dr Iz - is awesome - classes are full of good stuff – Thermo – power plant tour

  11. Identify one positive thing about the UG ME program that should be maintained in the future cont….. • Senior Design • NISH competition. • A good transition for students from academia to the real world • …. experience, going all steps like the real world • The idea where it focus’s on project management is excellent. • Keep it laid back, it helps in keeping good attitudes. • Keep customer contact • The course sequencing seemed to work very well as far as building material on top of the previous class work • Projects with disabled workers focus • Senior Design! Best part of ME program • The course sequence is appropriate • Keep the experience centered around assisting specific customers. • Great shop • By the end of senior design, I was pretty sick of listening to presentations

  12. Your most rewarding experience at OU • Joining Theta Tau • Relay for Life • Graduating Magna Cum Laude • Making the Dean’s List [4] • Playing with Marching 110 • Playing on-stage at Halloween • Study abroad in Ecuador really changed the way I see the world (in a good way) • Discovering that if I don’t like something in my life then I can change it. • Getting involved • Working my way up the leadership ladder in my fraternity to eventually become president • All of it….

  13. Your most rewarding experience at OU cont… • Retaking Dynamics with Dr. Pasic to get an A and actually understand the material • Being successful in all my classes [2] • Co-op [2] • Being a part of the Robe Leadership seminar • Getting to know classmates and professors • The friendships made • The degree [2] • When I realized I would graduate on time • Upcoming graduation

  14. Your most rewarding experience at OU cont… • Senior Design…… • We actually made a difference in the real world. - Delivering our project and….. - seeing how much it helped the workers - seeing our customers using our device - seeing his reaction - knowing our project is really being used and appreciated by someone who needed it

  15. Your most rewarding experience at OU cont… Senior Design…… - Experience was certainly very rewarding ……Spearheading the creation of a baja team was as well - The first time we put on our vertical travel assembly and it actually worked - I became a lot closer to my engineering friends and gained a lot of hands-on experience. - Working on different projects with other students in and out of class • Finishing our prototype, finishing the FE • Finishing the Sr. Design project • Senior Design Demo Day • Winning NISH competition [7] • Receiving the Honorable Mention Award for the NISH Competition

  16. Other things you will remember about OU • Friends [11] and meeting new people [3] • Parties [7] • Bars & Court Street • The ladies • The girls and the drunks, and the drunk girls • The atmosphere, the social life • Craziness on the weekends • Spring fests and antics only in Athens • The fights • Fridays • Campus [3] and Athens area - Walking around in early fall & spring • Early morning runs - the 2009 ice storm - basketball games - riding out to Strouds Run, symphony concerts • Unpredictable weather • This is my home now, not where I’m from, I’m now from Athens.

  17. Other things you will remember about OU cont… • Stocker -long late nights and weekends [5] • Co-ops [3] • All the professors who showed real interest in my future as an engineer. • The caliber of leadership in the ME department, both in the students and the professors. I constantly get comments about how invested in our careers the ME department is. • Fun, but educational learning environment (as for most of the professors) Chang’s enthusiasm for fluids (which helped me quite a bit in learning the material) • Professors, students, and the hard times I had with classes and the one point where I thought I’d never make it through the program

  18. Other things you will remember about OU cont… • Turning in my last physics lab, and Robe Leadership seminar. • Why the h%#$ is the library so HOTT!!? • Homework and laziness • Time I should have used for school that I didn’t, and all the fun that came from that • Quick trips to Oak Room during ChE lab • FEA • Lasagna dinners at Dr. Bob’s with ASME • Dr. Halliday’s witty real life experience • Stirling cooled root beer • Going to DC because we won the NISH comp. • Flight team • Scuba diving class

  19. What do you wish you had known as a freshman? Classes and scheduling • Schedule courses better i.e. take 16-18 hrs as freshman not senior • Generally if you go to class you do better. • When to schedule classes to avoid ridiculously hard quarters. • Don’t take so many classes your last quarter • Take Chem152 early so your not stuck in it as a senior • Some classes were only offered certain quarters, more about the co-op program, and that business minor classes have counted for some tier I, II classes • Don’t take all of the easy electives in the first two years • Get the hard classes out of the way as soon as possible • I should have declared a major right away as a freshmen • How much work was ahead of me, how hard it would be and how frustrating college can be. • Don’t let engineering stifle your creativity. • You have more time a day than you think. • Hoping classes will be removed from the curriculum before you graduate is not sound policy.

  20. What do you wish you had known as a freshman cont.. Classes and scheduling cont…. • I wish I knew how to study the correct way • School work gets easier • Fun is as important as learning, you won’t get through it without both • More about the different types of engineering, (civil probably more for me) • Statics, dynamics, differential eqns., vibrations, etc. • College is 1 part hard work and 1 part fun. If you don’t have the right balance it is horrible. • A good grasp of MatLab [2] and all of the benefits of Stocker’s computer labs. • Even if people think a professor or class is hard, it might not be hard for you as an individual. Do not start the class with a bias opinion. • Don’t worry too much about grades • That I wasn’t gonna get a job cause the economy sucks • Time management skills • Co-op…Co-op…Co-op [3] – Stretches college to 5 years and a less packed last year • The last quarter hours exception. • That classes hardly apply to what you’ll end up doing in a job.

  21. What do you wish you had known as a freshman cont.. Athens area - All the different art venues, the different parks in Athens. - That Athens is a much more interesting place than just going out to the bars - Peking Express Chinese food - Where Stroud’s Run is - Do not live at Riverpark - Free meals on Monday and Wednesday beside the Oasis Words of Wisdom • That a good time can come in any form around any corner. • Take time to relax • Don’t get video games, you get more done in life • Don’t take the dining hall for granted • How fast time would fly • Enjoy everything and not stress the little things • Making friends is really easy when you have an open mind • Quit freaking out! It’s really not that bad • It gets better • How to use software and alarm clocks etc… • Where to live, which teachers to take • College flies by… Enjoy your everyday of college.. Get a fake ID as soon as possible

  22. Advice for next year’s SrD class cont… • Make a jig out of plastic that helps some sort of assembly process and you stand a good chance at winning the NISH competition. • If the beginning of project work goes smoothly in the fall, do not slack up and think it will be easy sailing the rest of the way. • Don’t waste time, it will come back to bite you, but take time to enjoy • Don’t pick an “easy” project because by the end of the year you may be really bored with it • Don’t put everything off until spring quarter - Try not to stress - Just take it step-by-step and you’ll get there, even when others are skeptical. - Don’t worry, it’s not worth it. - Share work and be friendly. It works out fine. • Spend the schools money • Go to grad school cause the job markets not getting any better • Good luck punks, it’s never easy to follow up a championship • Wear condoms all the time • Take a deep breath, it seems overbearing but you will get through it

  23. “Lessons learned” at OU • Get your Dr. Bob homework done early - Don’t procrastinate [2] on Dr. Bob’s HW • Never call a professor with a doctorates degree by just his/her name • The professor makes all the difference when registering for classes. • Always do you HW and always go to class and you should rarely have to study • Don’t wait till the last minute to do homework, otherwise you have to worry about doing it all day • College is the best 4 years of your life. Time Management! • Don’t always listen to your advisor [2] as far as scheduling goes. Learn how to read your DARS! • Don’t let a bad professor be lazy, make him teach, ask questions and learn like your supposed to. • Don’t trust EE grad students when they run EE305 in summer –they say you did lab correct, but different story when grading.

  24. “Lessons learned” at OU cont… • Turn off the TV, TV = unhappiness • Athens cops suck • Don’t fall asleep with your shoes on. • Get heavily involved in a couple extracurricular, but not too many. • You should leave Palmer if a “USA” chant is breaking out. • Pepper spray does not taste like peppers • Just because The Pub opens at 10:30 am, you don’t always have to go • Don’t use fake ID’s at the Pub • Don’t eat Domino’s by the slice. • Find out which math teachers are hard. • Alcohol + OU food = gaining weight

  25. “Lessons learned” at OU cont… • ”Live life by the minute” “Don’t stress” • Stress is a great motivator, but there are better ways. • Take advantage of the time you got, it goes by fast. • If you do what you want you will always go in the right direction. • I have interests well beyond engineering • Team work is important – focus on building solid, encouraging relationships with team members. • Suns out, guns out • How to procrastinate • Enjoy all of it, it goes by so fast • Do work ahead of the due date • Enjoy the “free” time you have • Enjoy life as much as possible even if there’s too much going on • Larger is not always better. (Larger is the technology of yesterday) • Focus on priorities • Make sure to experience as much new/fun things as you possibly can, but only after your work is done • It is important to make friends in your classes so you can work on homework and study together • Know how to balance fun and school • Don’t take labs during spring quarter.

  26. “Parting shots” – fun (and anonymous) statements • All right, lets do this Leeroy Jenkins • Dr. Iz….. - thanks for the cookies. - Dr. Iz never usually talks in SrD, whats he doing? -“Repent in sackeloth and ashes!!” – Dr. Iz • Please place picture of Bob on the Beach here • Where does Dr. Bob get his weed? • Don’t ever expect to get anything from Dr. Halliday on time. • I had heard through the grapevine that Dr. Kremer holds the NCAA Division 3 record for tackles in a season….is this true? • Is Nikki Blackmore the top ME student in the whole state? • ”I caught a Lab-Admin…Hee..Hee!”

  27. “Parting shots” – fun (and anonymous) statements • This is only the end so a new beginning can happen. • Get all of your homework done then go get a drink. • “Love your enemies” • Woooo!!!! • Tequila shots give bad hangovers • Wish we could use the new building • Work hard and play harder! • You only live once • Statics should be taught as an ME course (had to learn most of the static principles in Dynamics) • Signing your name on take-home thermo quizzes does not mean you worked by yourself

  28. “Parting shots” – fun (and anonymous) statements cont… • Go Reds!! • There’s one!! • Don’t graduate, celebrate • Don’t take life too seriously – you’ll never get out alive • Party hard and live it up – you only live once • I’m glad I chose to be an engineer; I’m thrilled to have a job!! WOO!! • ”Live life, you only live once” • Shout out to Stephanie Walker, nicest person in the building. • No regrets • OU is a great school, very well respected. I am successful and proud that I went here. • Everything was great and I will continue to recommend this program and university to everyone. • Put a bar in Stocker Center – fully stocked – for post exam purposes • Will I really graduate, or is the curriculum still changing??? • Adios!
