Identity theft, a serious crime where someone steals personal information for financial gain, has seen a 44% decline since 2004, affecting 11.6 million Americans in 2011. Thieves exploit unsecured internet connections, neglected documents, and social engineering tactics to commit this crime. Protect yourself by avoiding public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, shredding personal documents, and being cautious with your information online. If you fall victim, report the theft immediately to your card issuer, credit agencies, and file a police report.
