Organizational Overview: EMCI • Engineering Management Certification International: a professional development initiative for engineering managers • A partnership of ASME, ASCE, AIChE, AIME, ASEM and SME. • A certification program that: • validates an engineer’s competence in engineering management; • is based on uniform, globally administered examinations that evaluate the engineering manager’s knowledge and skills in planning, organizing, allocating resources,directing and controlling technologicalactivities, budgeting, finance and marketing; and • confers certification via examination at two levels driven by work experience • EMCF = Engineering Management Certification Fundamentals • EMCP = Engineering Management Certification Professional

Organizational Overview: EMCI • Program Development History2004-2005ASME observed an increase in • the demand among young engineers for resources to rise up the corporate ladder • the proliferation of advanced degree programs in Engineering Management • the expansion of global operations among engineering-, science-, and technology-focused corporations • the interest in Engineering Management Certification among members of professional and technical societies

Organizational Overview: EMCI • Program Development History2005ASME, ASCE, AIME and AIChE • Surveyed its members to elicit their interest in engineering management • Participated in a role delineation study among engineering managers across all disciplines to identify best practices for Engineering Managers • Answers were compiled, analyzed and ranked in order of importance, resulting in the EMCI Body of Knowledge (EMC-BOK) …

Organizational Overview: ASEM • Advocates for industry and education cooperation to promote best practices in engineering management through research, professional development, and conferences among students, faculty, industry, and government. • Engineering Management Journal • 20 years, published quarterly • Providing practical, pertinent knowledge on the management of technology, technical professionals, and technical organizations • 30th Annual Conference in Springfield, Missouri October 14-17, 2009 • Promotes best standards practices in the engineering management field through departmental accreditation in related disciplines • Seeks partnerships with organizations such as EMCI to provide value to its members

EMCI-ASEM Collaboration Process • EMCI approached ASEM in Fall ‘05 • MS&T facilitated contact with ASEM Board in Fall ‘06 • EMCI attended ASEM Board Meeting in March ‘07 • Motion approved to explore collaborative partnering • EMCF Pilot established in September ’07 • Exchange of ASEM and EMCI BOKs for evaluation in January ’08 • EMCI attended ASEM Board Meeting in March ’08 • ASEM and EMCI finalized partnership in May ’08 • Network of ASEM-certified Engineering Management Departments • Corporate members and sponsors • Subject matter expertise for BOK, Exam, and Curriculum Advisory Committees
