  2. Special Sum • The imperfect and future of sum is irregular just like the present  • The imperfect is formed with the base –era and the personal endings • Pay special attention to the translations! • Eram - I was - Ermus - We were • Ers - You were - Ertis- You all were • Erat - He was - Erant- They were

  3. The future ofsum • The future is weirder. It has the base –er, a vowel (o, i or u- just like bo, bi, bu) and the personal endings • Best if you just memorize it • Erō - I shall be - Erimus - We shall be • Eris - You will be - Eritis- You all will be • Erit - He will be - Erunt- They will be

  4. One More Verb! • The verb ‘possum, posse, potui’ means to be able • Its forms are based off of the Combo of ‘pot’ and the forms of ‘sum’ • If you know this one rule all the forms are EASY • Whenever the ‘t’ from pot is next to an ‘s’ it assimilates to an ‘s’ • Saying potsum is too hard!

  5. Present and Imperfect of “Possum” Present 1- PoSsum I am able PoSsumus We are able 2- Potes You areable Potestis You all are able 3- Potest He is able PosSunt They are able Imperfect 1- Poteram I was able Poterāmus We were able 2- Poterās You were able Poterātis You all were able 3- PoteratHe was able Poterant They were able

  6. Can you guess the future? 1- PoteroI will be able Poterimus we will be able 2- Poterisyou will be ablePoteritis you all will be able 3- Poterithe will be able Poterunt they will be able

  7. Last point! • Another grammatical feather for your cap: The complementary infinitive • You’ve already used it many times • An infinitive that goes with another infinitive to complete it’s meaning • I want to go to the store • You ought to praise the gods. • Possum esse magna.
