Origin of Basketball • The origins of the game of basketball can be traced back to a gentleman by the name of Dr. James Naismiththat was created in 1891 at a YMCA training school.
The original idea of basketball was fairly close to what it is today. • Originally the idea of the game was to get a leather ball into a peach basket located 10 feetoff of the ground. • The first game was played with two peach baskets for goals and a soccer ball. • Now days we have an enclosed area and hard wood floors to play on. The basket is metal and there is a net and backboard • Became an Olympic even in 1936
There are many different kinds of defenses to run in basketball • Man to Man Each defense is ran for a • Sagging Man different purpose. • Zone • 2-3 • 2-3 Match up zone • 1-3-1 • 2-1-2 • Box and 1 • Triangle and 2
Man to Man/Sagging Man • First off DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!! • The man to man defense is ran with each of the five players on your team matched up with one of the other 5 players on the opposing team. • Sagging man is the same as a man to man but you are a few steps off your man towards the goal not guarding them up close. This would be used to help prevent penetration and clog up the post area around the basket.
2-3 Zone/Match up Zone • The 2-3 zone is when you have 2 men at the top of the free throw line (normally guards) and 3 other players spread underneath the basket in the lane (normally post players) • The 2-3 match up zone is the same as a regular 2-3 but each of the players on defense keeps an eye on their man almost guarding them specifically.
1-3-1 Zone • The 1-3-1 zone is laid out with a player (guard player) at the very top, almost half court line. • Then with 3 spread even throughout the middle of the court free throw line extended. • Then finally there is the back man in the zone always protecting the basket (normally a post player).
2-1-2 Zone • The 2-1-2 zone is also an extended zone like the 1-3-1. • Instead of the 1 person at the top of the zone like the 1-3-1 there is 2 people. • In the middle standing about the free throw line there is only 1 player. • Then at the bottom of the zone there are 2 players protecting each side of the basket standing around the blocks (last large square on the side of the free throw line).
Box and 1 • The box and 1 defense is where there is 1 player on your team that denies 1 of the other players on the opposing team from catching the basketball and scoring. Normally put this defensive person on their best offensive player. • The other 4 players on defense guard the offense by standing in 4 key points. The two blocks around the basket and the other two on each side of the free throw line.
Triangle and 2 • The triangle and 2 defense is almost exactly like the box and 1. • Instead of 1 player guarding their best offensive player you have 2 players guarding the opposing teams best two offensive players. • The other 3 players are in a zone defense. 1 standing in the middle of the free throw line and the other two are on each of the blocks guarding the basket.
Offense • Just like defense there are many different types of offenses to run. • There are almost an unlimited amount of set plays and offenses to run. • Other regular universal offenses that are most common to any basketball player include • 5 man motion • 4 out 1 in
5 man motion • The 5 man motion is the most common and universal offense in basketball where all 5 offensive players are in movement on the court. • The offense is ran at random. Players set screens for each other to get open and an occasional ball pick (screening the man defending the ball). • Different kinds of cuts can be used off of screens to get open for a shot.
4 Out 1 In • The 4 out 1 in offense is exactly like the 5 man motion but with a post player staying down around the basket posting up for the ball. • The other 4 players still set ball picks and screens for each other getting open for shots and dribble penetration.
