  1. Ratio In this tutorial, you will learn how to identify simple ratios. You will also be able to write ratios in their simplest form.

  2. Look below at the squares that have been coloured in. The ratio of blue to red squares is shown below. Blue:Red 1:4 Blue:Red 2:6 On the following page there are five sets of squares. Write the ratio of blue to red squares in your book and show your secret agent contact.

  3. Have a go at drawing the sets of squares to represent the ratio of the following blue to red squares. You’ll have to write them down first as they flash up. Ok good luck. Ratio of Blue to Red 2:3 1:3 2:5 1:4 3:7 2:6

  4. Now you understand how to write different ratios, we are going to try and reduce our ratios to their simplest forms. The ratio of 3:9 of blue to red squares can be reduced to 1:3. E.g. Blue : Red Have a go at the five below. 3:21 2:14 4:20 4:16 5:15

  5. Have a go at the following word problems. Show your working in your books. The first one has been done for you. E.g. Bunches of flowers have lilies and roses in the ratio of 1:3. One bunch has 20 flowers. How many roses are there? Answer 15 roses. Q1. In September there were 16 rainy days and 14 sunny days. Write the ratio of wet to dry days. Reduce to its simplest form. Q2. Bags of bananas and apples have been put together in the grocers shop in the ratio of 2:3. A lady buys 12 bananas how many apples does she have. Q3. At the gym club there are 2 boys for every 3 girls. There are 30 children at the club. How many boys are there? Q4. Dee mixes 1 tin of red paint with 2 tins of white. She needs 9 tins of paint altogether. How many tins of red paint does she need?

  6. Final Challenge The ‘Delightful Decorating Company’ has designed a new colour of paint called Glorious. It is made up of a mixture of green and yellow paint and it has to be accurate. To ensure that the shade is correct it is made up in the following ratio: Green : Yellow 1 Litre 3 : 5 Can you help DD Company sort out the correct ratios of green to yellow paint for the following quantities.
