2. Population studies: Introduction • The population of the world is increasing • In the last 250 years the increase has been very rapid • Now the world’s population is over seven billion

3. Population studies: Introduction • There are some places where many people live • There are other parts of the world where few people live

4. Population studies: Introduction • Places where many people live are called densely populated • These include places like New York City

5. Population studies: Introduction • Parts of China can be very crowded too • So can cities such as Rio de Janeiro in Brazil

6. Population studies: Introduction • There are other areas where hardly anyone lives • These are places which are difficult for people to survive • The Himalaya mountains

7. Population studies: Introduction • Or the Andes in South America • Where the peaks rise to 20,000 feet above sea level • People live in the narrow valley bottoms

8. Population studies: Introduction • Or in the Rain forests of the Amazon Basin • The jungle is too hot and damp to live in

12. So remember • Densely populated is crowded • Sparsely populated is quite empty
