How did Goose Hollow get it’s name? • Women raised geese in the low-lands • Flocks became mixed • Feuds stirred up • Police could not sort out geese • Closed the matter by threatening to imprison the "first woman to start another ruckus over geese." • The Oregonian first used the name Goose Hollow for the neighborhood in 1875

  3. H I S T O R Y • Goose Hollow is a neighborhood located in Southwest Portland. • The Oregonian first established this name “Goose Hollow” for the neighborhood in 1879 in the newspaper. Portland Oregon was founded in 1851, but six years prior to that time • Daniel Lownsdale had claimed his land in the lower end of the “Flats” in current Goose Hollow. • This was the first Tannery west of the Rockies and North of Mexico. • Thomas Carter had built a house near SW 18th and Clay in 1851 when the city of “Portland” was founded. • That land today is owned by First United Methodist Church. • So the neighborhood itself had plenty of upcoming construction going on before the city was even founded. Goose Hollow was a unique town that became part of the several other cities in Portland

  4. S I G N I F I C A N T P L A C E S • Lincoln High School was established in 1869 • Providence Park was built in 1893 • In 1950 the Radio Cab Company moved into Goose Hollow to service transportation to Portland's streetcar lines • The Goose Hollow Inn opened in 1967

  9. N E G A T I V E S • LOW DIVERSITY - when compared to other Portland neighborhoods and primarily consisting of single living housing and whites • BUSY - High transit area with events happening at all hours • NOT CAR FRIENDLY - Confusing and difficult navigation by automobile

  10. F U T U R E • HOUSING - building more housing for families and college students • POPULATION - increase in population as well as attract more diversity • MORE ATTRACTIONS - restaurants, events, shops
