  4. Knowing how to set and achieve goals are important life skills. Lets explore how to set and achieve goals …

  5. What is Goal Setting? The process of workingtowardsomething you want to accomplish

  6. TWO THINGS TO CONSIDER: (1) Is your goal a short term goal or a long term goal ? (2) Make sure your goal is realistic and reachable.

  7. REMEMBER: Long Term goals require a lot more time and patience than Short Term goals

  8. ALSO: If your goals are unrealistic and unreachable, you will end up getting frustrated and discouraged

  9. EIGHT STEPS TO FOLLOW: STEP 1: Write your goal down. * Put your written goal someplace where you will see it often.

  10. STEP 2: Make a plan . * List stepsyou need to follow to meet your goal.* Breaking your big goal into small steps can make it easierto meet your goal.

  11. STEP 3:Set a time line. * Whenwill I meet each step?* When will I reach my finalgoal?

  12. STEP 4:Get help.* Identify people and thingsyou need to help you meet your goal.

  13. STEP 5:Start now!!* Do notprocrastinate!

  14. STEP 6:Keep a written record of your progress.* Write steps down as you accomplish them.* This keeps you accountable and helps build confidence.

  15. STEP 7:Evaluate your progress.* Are you making progress?* Do you need to change anything?

  16. STEP 8:Reward Yourselffor met goals.* Buy or do something you enjoy as a reward.

  17. If you follow these eight steps… … you might have better success in achieving your goals!

  19. You need tostart setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals

  20. S. M. A. R. T. goals are: S = Specific M = Measurable A = Achievable R = Realistic T = Timely

  21. Let’s look at each part of “S.M.A.R.T.” goal setting:

  22. S = Specific • Goal is detailed, particular, or focused • You know exactlywhat you want to accomplish • Easy to understand

  23. M = Measurable • Goal you can see, observe, count, quantify • There is evidenceyou met goal • Consider the words(language) you use

  24. A = Achievable • Goal is self-maintained • Mostly up to youto meet • You have controlover meeting goal

  25. R = Realistic • Goal is practicaland possible • Balance between what is hardand what is easy • Requires a “stretch” that makes you progress and improve

  26. T = Timely • Goal is scheduled • Has a deadline • Must be finished by a certain dateor time

  28. Example 1:Mr. McCarthy (46 years old, only 6’3” feet tall) wants to play center for the Los Angeles Lakers basketball team next year. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = No

  29. Example 2:A Rogich Student wants to raise her math grade from 72% to over 80% within six weeks.. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = Yes

  30. Example 3:A Rogich student wants to have “better” and “cooler” hair. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = No

  31. Example 4:Mr. McCarthy’s wife wants to lose five pounds within 2 months so she can wear a certain dress to a wedding. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = Yes

  32. Example 5:Rogich’s principal expects Rogich’s sports teams to win first place in every competitive sport this year. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = No

  33. Example 6:Mr. English plans to improve his conversational Spanish by learning five new Spanish vocabulary words each week. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = Yes

  34. Example 7:Ms. Blue plans to lower her home electric bill this year by turning off all lights when rooms are not in use and using special energy-efficient light bulbs . S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = yes

  35. Example 8:Ms. Fabulous (who drinks six cups of coffee per day) plans to give up drinking coffee within six weeks by reducing her intake by one cup per week. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = Yes

  36. Example 9:Your counselor wants all of Rogich’s students to be “happier.” S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = No

  37. Example 10:Mr.Buzzard wants to include two servings of fruits and vegetables in his meals each day. S. M. A. R. T. goal ? Answer = Yes
