  5. What do you think of when you hear the word Health?

  6. Perhaps you think of someone who is in shape or an athlete

  7. Maybe you think of vegetables or a healthy food

  8. You might even think of someone who knows a lot about medicine or anatomy

  9. So … how do wedefine Health ?

  10. The definition of Health: Health is: a combination of physical, mental, & social well-being

  11. We represent this definition by using theHealth Triangle TheHealthTriangle Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  12. Do youknow what the words Physical, Mental & Emotional, and Social mean? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  13. Physical Health: Your Body: • Height, weight • In shape or not • Sickness, disease • Heart, lungs, organs Physical Mental & Emotional Social

  14. Mental &Emotional Health: • Thoughts & feelings • What you know • How you think & feel • Self-esteem • Attitudes Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  15. Social Health: Relationships with: • Family • Friends • Authority Figures • Boyfriends & girlfriends Physical Mental & Emotional Social

  16. Being “healthy” means well-being in allthreesides of the Health triangle Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  17. Being “healthy” means having a balancedhealth triangle Mental & Emotional A balance of a healthy body, healthy feelings and attitudes, and healthy relationships! Physical Social

  22. Let’s examine the Health Triangle a bit deeper: Physical Mental & Emotional Social

  23. Do all three sides of the triangle touch each other? Physical Mental & Emotional YES !!! A change on one side of the triangle will affect the other two sides. Social

  24. For example, how would a bad physical injury, like a broken leg, affect all three sides of the Health Triangle? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  25. Or, how would something negative Socially affect all three sides of the triangle ? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  26. Better yet, how would something positive Mentally and Emotionally affect all three sides of the Health Triangle? Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  27. In other words, you have a “Mind-Body Connection” • Your emotions affect your physical health and overall health • Your overall health affects your emotions

  28. Consider this: Your health triangle changes from day to day. Physical Mental & Emotional Social

  29. Consider this: One day, your triangle may be balanced and strong Physical Mental & Emotional Social

  30. Consider this: The next day, it might be weak on one or more sides Mental & Emotional Physical Social

  31. Even though your health changes from day to day, you should try daily to have a strong, balanced Health Triangle

  32. We have a word for trying to be as healthy as you can be … We use the term “wellness”

  33. Wellness: • A state of well-being or balanced health over a long period of time • Balancing and improving your health over weeks or months • Should be a part of your daily routine

  34. Each day, try to do something positive for eachside of your Health Triangle!

  35. During this Health class, we will explore ways to keep our Health Triangles strong and balanced!

  36. We will examine things which may harm or damage your health and well-being…

  37. We will also examine things which may improve and protect your health and well-being…

  38. Try to apply what we discuss in Health class to your daily lives.Make good decisions!
