  2. Jewish Calendar • The Jewish Calendar is not like our calendar. • It is based upon the phases on the moon. • It is called a luni-solar calendar. • The first day of the month correlates with the new moon

  3. Jewish Calendar cont. • Because the calendar is based upon the moon, the dates of holidays are different every year. • The Jewish day beings at sunset and continue until the following sunset. • This year is 5770 according to the Jewish calendar

Lasts over 2 days Shavuot Also known as Pentecost A pilgrim festival Jews believe the 10 Commandments were given on this day It’s a tradition to eat dairy meals on this day.   9. Jewish Festivals • Sukkot • Festival of Booths • Also known as the Festival of the Tabernacles • 7-day long festival • They must “dwell” in the booths, meaning most meals and some sleeping is done in the sukkot.

  10. Jewish Festivals • Hanukkah • Also called the Festival of Lights • An 8-day celebration • It marks the use of one days use of oil that lasted for 8 days. • They light one candle for each night. • The candle holder call a Menorah.

  11. Jewish Holidays • Purim • Also known as the Festival of Lots • Celebrates the story of Queen Esther from the Book of Esther. • It is a tradition to masquerade around in costumes and give to the poor and needy. • In Israel is it common to arrange a parade.
