  1. The Second Punic War Alps to Italy

  2. Rhone to the Alps • Hannibal has only a short window of time to cross the Alps. • His speech pg. 823 • He knows Scipio is close behind. • Scipio sails back to Rome to fight Hannibal in the Po valley.

  3. Problems in the Alps • Hannibal finds some mountain passes guarded by soldiers. • His troops start to run out of food. • They raid and steal from shepherds that live on the mountain.

  4. Mountain Friends • Hannibal encounters a tribe that offers him food, friendship, guides and hostages. • Hannibal is weary of this but accepts their offers. • The guides lead his army into a narrow pass and they are attacked by soldiers hidden along the pass.

  5. Mountain Traders • Hannibal's army is divided in two during the attack. • The fight last until the sun sets. • The next day Hannibal makes a concentrated attack and reunites his army. • He is able to push the enemy away.

  6. Mountain Traders • Although defeated, the mountain tribes harass Hannibal and his men as they march through the alps. • Hannibal is without guides. • Hannibal finally makes his way to the highest pass in the Alps. He camps for several days and lets his army rest.

  7. Snow and Rocks • His men encounter their first snow storm. • They easily lose the trail that is only marked by cairns.

  8. Snow and rocks • Hannibal’s army finally makes their way past the snow storm, over glaciers and now are blocked by large rocks. • Hannibal starts fires below the rocks and pours vinegar on the rocks. (did this really happen?) • This is his last obstacle before he crosses into Italy.
