The Second Punic War. pars tertia – in Italia. At last, in Italy. Hannibal loses about 30,000 men crossing the Alps and the Pyrenees. The remainder of his troops are tired, malnourished and injured. Hannibal recruits the inhabitants of the Po valley into his army and prepares for battle. .

  2. At last, in Italy • Hannibal loses about 30,000 men crossing the Alps and the Pyrenees. • The remainder of his troops are tired, malnourished and injured. • Hannibal recruits the inhabitants of the Po valley into his army and prepares for battle.

  3. Scipio and Hannibal fight • Scipio’s speech pg. 1097 • Hannibal’s speech pg. 1132 • Stakes are high for both sides.

  4. ominasunt mala • Two bad omens befall the Romans: • A wolf enters camp and wounds several soldiers before it leaves. • A swarm of bees are seen over Scipio’s tent.

  5. First Battle • Scipio makes a bridge across the Po river and crosses it, heading for Hannibal. • Scipio’s troops suddenly run into Hannibal and battle quickly starts. • Hannibal starts to out flank the Romans.

  6. First Battle • The Roman army is thrown into confusion. • Their horsemen and foot troops get entangled. • Men are trampled to death and the horses become agitated. • Scipio is wounded. • The army retreats.

  7. Flight from Hannibal • Scipio and his army return to camp but fear that Hannibal will continue his attack during the night. • They set campfires and leave for the Po river. • After crossing the Po they destroy their bridge.
