  2. Objective • By the end of this mini-lesson you will be familiar with some important heroes of the American Revolution!

  3. Not Just Soldiers • The Continental Army and Navy received help from many civilians or people not in the military.

  4. Nathan Hale • A teacher who served as an American spy in New York City. • When he was captured by the British, they hanged him. • According to legend, his finals words were, “I regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

  5. Fighting Men and Women

  6. John Paul Jones • An American Navy Commander • Battles large British ships • During one battle in the North Sea near Britain, the British asked Jones to give up. • He said, “I have not yet begun to fight.” • Jones kept fighting until the British ship gave up.

  7. Molly Pitcher • Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley earned the name Molly Pitcher by carrying fresh water to American troops during the Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey in 1778. • When her husband was wounded, she took his place in battle loading cannons.

  8. Tadeusz Kosciuszko • Came from Poland to volunteer to serve in the Continental Army. • Helped design the plans for a fort at West Point, New York, that is now part of the United States Military Academy.

If you were Jones would you have surrendered or kept fighting? • What was Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley’s nickname and why was she called that? • What important place did TadeuszKosciszko help design? • Why do you think these heroes were willing to risk their lives in the war? • Design a medal of honor for one of the Patriot heroes we learned about today. Be sure the medal shows the heroes contribution. Please color it and make it all pretty!
