This study explores the integration of the transport sector into future energy systems using the Balmorel model. It examines the implications of utilizing electric power in transport, implementing vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technologies, and evaluating the competition among different vehicle technologies. The analysis includes current power and transport system data, running scenarios with various assumptions, and focusing on maximizing social surplus. Results regarding electricity generation and investments in vehicles for 2030 highlight the potential for increased wind energy adoption, particularly with V2G capabilities.

  2. Overview Purpose Balmorel and Transport – the model Cases Results

  3. Purpose Adding transport to Balmorel enables analysis of: consequences of possibility of using electric power in transport sector consequences of adding vehicle-to-grid technologies competition between different vehicle technologies

  4. Input data Present power and transport system (e.g. capacities, storages, transmission lines, plants, consumption) Scenario data (e.g. prices, demands, technology data) • Model run • maximizing social surplus • Restrictions for transport and power system Model output: Configuration and operation of power and transport system Sketch of the Balmorel model including transport

  5. Input data (e.g. demand, prices, technical data, driving pattern) Modelling assumptions The transport model Costs Power flows The energy system (Balmorel) Configuration and operation of the transport system (and energy system) Transport add-on in Balmorel

  6. Storage Accessory loads Grid connection Power Bus Electric motor Generator Transmission Driving Wheels Engine Only applicable for the plug-in serial propulsion systems Power flow Propulsion system configuration of electric drive vehicles

  7. b) Braking energy Storage Unload Consumption propulsion Power Bus Consumption accessory loads Output from engine to generator Applicable for PHEVs propulsion systems Replaced with output from fuel cell for FCEVs Power flow Power flow model of electric drive vehicles a) From grid Storage Unload To grid Power Bus Output from engine to generator a) vehicles plugged in b) vehicles not plugged in

  8. Model formulation • Objective function: investments in vehicles • Vehicle restrictions: balancing of on board storage (plugged in) • balancing of the power bus (plugged in) • supply and demand must meet • minimum and maximum capacities • Electricity balance equation: power to grid - power from grid

  9. Assumptions Communication system in place Vehicles are aggregated in vehicle groups Loading and unloading depending on vehicles plugged in (cannot exceed max storage level) Average driving patterns (forcing specific patterns for use of diesel) All vehicles leave grid with predefined storage level

  10. Case description Model runs: Denmark without transmission possibilities to neighbouring countries 26 selected weeks with hourly resolution (26 X 168 time steps) Year 2030 Oil prices $100/barrel CO2 prices 40€/ton Road transport Including ICE, BEV, PHEV for persons transport

  11. Case description

  12. Case description

  13. Scenarios No usage of electricity in road transport Integrated power and transport system with V2G facilities Integrated power and transport system without V2G facilities

  14. Results Investments in vehicles 2030

  15. Results Electricity generation 2030

  16. Results Week 9: Power exchange between grid and vehicles vs. electricity prices (western Denmark) €/MWh MW hour

  17. Results Net power from grid – average on hours (daily cycle) MW

  18. Results Total power exchange between grid and vehicles

  19. Conclusions Using electricity for transport incorporates more wind – more than what is used by the transport sector with included V2G Adding V2G facilities incorporates more wind even though the usage is small

  20. Future works Dividing driving patterns into different profiles Analysis of larger energy systems e.g. Northern Europe Handling storage on a smaller level than vehicle group Storage level when leaving – variable instead of parameter
