  1. Mathematics 2Ms. Meek Adding Multiple Addends

  2. Review of Addition Addition is the combination of two or more numbers into a new larger number. There are many strategies used when learning how to add numbers.

  3. Addition Vocabulary Words to know: • sum – the answer to an addition problem. • add – to find the sum of two or more numbers. • addends – any of the numbers that are added together.

  4. Addition Vocabulary Example: 1 + 2 = 3 addends sum Problems can be written vertically or horizontally (across or up and down). Problems can be written with numbers and symbols, or with words.

  5. Adding More Than Two Addends Example: 1 + 2 + 3 = When you have three addends, add the first two together. Then, take the sum of the first two and add it to the third addend for a total sum.

  6. Adding More Than Two Addends Example: 3 ^ 1 + 2 + 3 = 3 + 3 = 6

  7. Adding More Than Three Addends Add one number at a time:Example: 3 ^ 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 3 + 3 =6 6 + 4 = 10

  8. Adding More Than Three Addends Add sets of two addends at a time:Example: 3 7 ^ ^ 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 = 3 + 7 = 10Adding sets of addends works when there is an even set of addends.

  9. Practice 1. 7 + 8 + 2 = 7 + 8 =15 15 + 2 = 17 • 1 + 5 + 9 + 3 = 1 + 5 = 6 9 + 3 = 12 6 + 12 = 18

  10. Practice 3. 2 + 6 + 9 + 4 = 2 + 6 = 8 9 + 4 = 13 8 + 13 = 21 4. 3 + 4 + 6 + 1 + 2 = 3 + 4 = 7 7 + 6 = 13 13 + 1 = 14 14 + 2 = 16

  11. Conclusion • When adding more than two numbers, we can start by adding the first two numbers, and then add remaining numbers to the sum. • Or, add numbers in pairs, and add their sums.
