Justification • Group on campus that works on sustainability issues • Diverse group of stakeholders that meet infrequently and have large objectives.   • Opportunity to analyze the leadership methods for the decision making process in a group with limited meetings • Opportunity to examine objectives that inspired the creation of this committee, progress toward the objectives, and possible shortcomings

Chancellor’s Campus Sustainability Committee background • Established on Oct. 22, 2008 by Chancellor Henry Yang • Advise the Chancellor and campus administrators on matters of campus sustainability • Make recommendations on sustainability initiatives • Prioritize and monitor the execution and progress of the campus sustainability plan toward goals • Make Recommendations on allocations of available funding resources • Provide guidance in the creations and fostering of alliances • Conduct an ongoing and thorough consultative process to solicit campus input in developing a vision to enhance international leadership • Use the Campus Sustainability Plan as a blueprint for UCSB’s sustainability efforts

CSC Mission Statement In striving to enhance UCSB practices and to make a truly “sustainable campus,”we use the current budget constraints as an opportunity to look for ways to redefine roles played within our organization and reassess how we manage and assign work. On an annual basis, we will identify a number of areas for improvement, as they not only provide opportunities to reduce our environmental impact, but also opportunities to save the campus capital over time .

Achievements • Academics: 1ST group of Chancellor’s Sustainability interns • Built Environment: Implemented practices to include one CSC member on each building committee • 22% of energy from renewable sources • 50% of food purchased organic and/or local • 71% diversion rate of waste • 12,000+ people bike to campus • 90% of UCSB campus irrigated with reclaimed water

Impact Recommendations • Prioritize innovative ways of reaching the ‘non-subscribing’ audience in order to close performance gap • Increase involvement through campus events • Prioritizes a highly visible re-instatement of the Sustainability Champions recognition award • Reconsider sustainability solutions that may have been seen as “too risky” in the past • Identify a liaison for Bren GP and increase outreach to students during proposal season

Process Recommendations • Prioritize filling vacant committee posts and subcommittee chairs • Identify action items for intermeeting progress • Greater involvement of advisory/consultant committee members • Leverage achievements, campus scale and shared vision to collaborate with local government to facilitate community impact • Secure multi-year funding commitments for increased sustainability impact
