  2. World Population Trends

  3. Reasons for Population Growth • Lower death rate (yr per 1000 people) • Better health care • Better living conditions • More food supplies (Better technology) • Higher Birthrate (yr per 1000 people)

  4. Problems with increase • Warfare • Shortages • Food • Housing • Services (Hospitals, schools) • Famine* (Vocab word)= severe lack of food

  5. World Population Distribution by Region, 1800–2050 Population by Region

  6. Population Facts • The first billion took from the dawn of humanity until 1830. • The second billion took only 100 years -- from 1830 to 1930. • Three billion more arrived in the next 60 years. • The next billion will take only 13 years (yes, just 13 years!) • Every second 5 people are born and 2 people die, a net gain of 3 people • The world’s population is growing by 200,000 people a day.

  7. Population Distribution:(Where people live) 90 % of the World’s population is in the northern hemisphere. 50% live in cities. 50% lives in Asia, it is about 20% of earth’s land area.

  8. Population Density • Earth’s population is 7 billion •  Earth's total area is 197 million square miles. • MATH TIME!!!! Soo… what is our world population density? • World Population density is 34.5per sq. mile • Mumbai-29,650 people/sq. mile • India- Most Dense Country in the World • Mongolia – least dense country--- • has only about 4 people/ sq. mile • U.S. has about 81 people/ sq. mile • Missouri 85.3 people/sq mile

  9. Movement • Internal Migration: Movement within a country. • Urbanization: movement from farms and villages to cities. • The global proportion of urban population rose dramatically from 13% (220 million) in 1900 to 29% (732 million) in 1950 to 49% (3.2 billion) in 2005. The projected figure is likely to rise to 60% (4.9 billion) by 2030

  10. Percentage of Urban Population

  11. Immigration vs Emigration Emigrate (Exit): people leave a country Immigrate (Go Into a Country): when people come into a country. *If I move from the U.S. to Canada, I emigrate from the U.S. and immigrate to Canada. To Canada, I am an immigrant.

  12. Push factors Pull factors • Shortage of farmland • Shortage of jobs • War • Intolerance • Lack of freedom • Natural disasters • Jobs • Peace • Tolerance • Freedom • Health care

  13. Monday, October 1st Write down your homework! What is population density? Then, name two places in the world with high and low population density.
