  3.  Your task It is two nearly two hundred years since the Norman Conquest. Henry II is now King of England. Read about his turbulent relationship with his friend the archbishop Thomas Becket on p.102-3 (Wilkes) and note down: Reasons why the two were friends Reasons why they fell out Write a ‘Tweet’ summarising the story of their relationship

  4. Reasons they were friends Enjoyed each other’s company – hunted, got drunk, chased women together! Henry trusted Becket – made him Chancellor & Archbishop

  5. Why they fell out Henry was bad-tempered – threw off his clothes & ate straw Henry misunderstood Becket – changed character when he became archbishop Becket didn’t want to help Henry make changes to church courts Becket excommunicated Henry’s friends!

  6.  Your task • Imagine you are Henry II. Write an email to Becket trying to explain why you are so angry with him. Refer to the following points: • Why you trusted Becket • Special jobs you gave him • Changes to the Church you wanted help with • Excommunication of friends • Explain why it was important to make changes to the Church for Henry & the country

  8.  Your task Email your letter to the person next to you. Assess your partners work. Imagine you are now Beckett. Email back explaining your actions. You may wish to explain yourself by referring to the same 4 points again, but from your point of view! Explain why it is important that you don’t do anything to weaken the power of the Church!

  9. Print out your two ‘emails’ and stick them in your book. Below you email write a short judgement on who you think was more to blame for the break down in Henry and Becket’s friendship  What could have been done to save Henry and Becket’s friendship?
