Current Event #2 2. “Sainthood: Pope Francis Makes History with Dual Canonization of Pope John XXIII & John Paul II.” Vatican ceremonies honored former Popes who brought 2,000 year-old Catholic Church into modern times. • Steps to Sainthood: • Servant of God • Venerable / Heroic in Virtue (faith , hope, & charity • Blessed (beatification) – heaven, salvation, martyrdom • Saint (2 miracles) through intercession / prayer Unprecedented ceremony was also historic because it was witnessed by emeritus Pope Benedict XVI

Current Event #3 • 3. “Breakthrough: Nuclear Transfer Cloning Technology Used to make Stem Cells from Adult Humans.” • Cloned embryos can be used as a source for stem cells that match a patient and can produce any cell type. Stem cells have the potential to grow organs and treat & possibly cure diseases

Current Event #4 4. “Oklahoma’s Botched Lethal Injection Marks New Front in Battle over 8th Amendment and Executions.” White House says procedures fell short of humane standard; inmate died of a heart attack 40 minutes later. President Obama still believes that some crimes are so heinous that executions are merited

Current Event #5 5. “Mississippi Democratic Congressman Defends Controversial use of ‘Uncle Tom’ Racial Remark.” Rep. accuses Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas of not advancing African-American & minority rights.
