  2. Warm-Up • Think back to when you were first born • Would you say people are born good and learn how to be bad • OR • Would you say people are born bad and learn how to be good • Write a brief paragraph explaining your opinion

  4. Three Main Philosophers • These three philosophers ideas helped shape the way our government is ran today • John Locke • Thomas Hobbes • Baron De Montesquieu

  5. Locke • Biography • Lived in England from 1632-1704 • Wrote the Second Treatise of Government

  6. Locke • Beliefs • People were born good and society corrupts them • All ppl have natural rights that cannot be taken away • Life, liberty, and property • Ppl should be free to live their own lives • Purpose of government is to secure and protect ppl’s rights • Ppl must obey laws • Ppl have a right to rebel and change the govt if it abuses its power

  7. Locke • Importance • His ideas were used to justify the American Revolution • Thomas Jefferson borrowed his ideas to write the Declaration of Independence • “natural rights” influenced our Bill of Rights

  8. Hobbes • Biography • Lived in England from 1588-1679 • Wrote The Leviathan

  9. Hobbes • Beliefs • Ppl were born corrupt and a govt is needed to control and protect them • Social Contract-ppl give up their free will to form a govt in the hope that it will control society and end chaos • Ppl have no right to rebel against the govt • Govt should have absolute power • Monarchies were preferred

  10. Hobbes • Importance • Originator of the social contract theory • Ideas about popular sovereignty and limited govt come from him

  11. Montesquieu • Biography • Lived in France from 1689-1755 • Wrote The Spirit of Laws in 1748

  12. Montesquieu • Beliefs • War led to the need for govt and laws • Purpose of govt is to maintain order in society, provide political liberty, and protect property • The power of the government should be balanced • No one part of government should have total control

  13. Montesquieu • Importance • From him, we get our ideas of: • Check and balances • Separate and equal branches • Ordered government
