Understanding Forces: Balanced and Unbalanced Dynamics

In this chapter, we explore the fundamental concept of forces, defining a force as a push or pull. We examine balanced forces, which do not change an object's motion, with net force equating to zero. In contrast, unbalanced forces are discussed, highlighting how they occur when forces act in the same or opposite directions, leading to motion changes. Unbalanced forces can cause an object to start, stop, or alter its direction. This lesson emphasizes the role of force strength, represented visually through the width of arrows in diagrams.

  1. May the FORCES be with you! Chapter 2, Lesson 1

  2. A force is: A push or a pull • A. Balanced Forces: Equal forces acting in opposite directions • 1) Balanced forces acting on an object will not change its motion • 2) The net force is zero Is motion being changed here? 0 + =

  3. Unbalanced Forces • 1) When two forces act in the same direction, they add together + =

  4. 2) When forces act in opposite directions they also add together. + = The width of the arrows = strength of the Force!

  5. 3) Unbalanced forces can cause an object to start moving, stop moving, or change direction. 4) Unbalanced forces will change an object’s motion. The End
