  8. Reading • Reading Street Common Core Curriculum • Spelling • Phonics • Vocabulary • Fluency • Comprehension • Reading Centers • Small Guided Reading Groups

  9. Reading Center Packets • Based on Reading Street • Students work in small, multi-ability groups • Flexible student grouping: DRA, DIBELS, and teacher observation • Students pulled to work in guided reading groups with texts at similar levels • Whole group: Monday, introduction to concepts, strategies, and story • Monday-Friday: Centers and Guided Reading • Center packets: Completed throughout week and due, completed, on Fridays

  10. Writing • The Writing Process used through the Write From the Beginning Program • Pre-write • Drafting • Revising • Editing • Publishing • Grading

  11. Spelling • The primary goal is to make the students lifelong spellers. • Spelling will be comprised of 5 high frequency words and 10 words that come from our Reading Street weekly spelling pattern(s). • Spelling tests will be held on Thursdays. • They will include: 3 dictation sentences and the 15 spelling list words.

  12. Instructional and Learning Shifts - math • Common Core State Standards Domains • 4 domains Operations & algebraic thinking; • number & operations in base 10, • measurement & data, • Geometry • Grade Level Learning Requirements • These 4 domains are what we introduce to our student as learning requirements. Every topic you see on the next slide will fall into one of these requirements/domains. • 8 Math Practices • Every time we teach math lessons, we are modeling math practices that we eventually hope become an automatic behavior for every student when solving math problems. • Math-Student Behaviors examples of these practices include making sense of problems, persevering in solving them, using appropriate tools (pen/paper, rulers, calculators, protractors) Looking for patterns and justifying their answer. • ACE Problem Solving – This is another strategy we have been using to enforce problem solving behaviors/practices.

  13. Titans ACE Learning Focus in Content Problem Solving Answer - Answer the problem Compute/Cite Evidence – Solve the problem – show your work Explain your reasoning What this would look like in 2nd grade is that each day your child will be given a word problem to solve. They will answer it, compute (show their work) and explain with words how they solved the problem.

  14. Math • EnVision Math Curriculum • Addition/subtraction up to 3 digits • Place value up to 1,000 • Multiplication (1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s) • Money • Telling time: Clocks (digital/analog), • Geometry- Shapes, angles, vertices • Graphs (e.g. pictographs, bar graphs) • Measurement (inches, centimeters, feet, meters) • Problem Solving

  15. Classroom Continuous Improvement • We are constantly looking for ways to improve student achievement. Some of the things we are doing are: • Mission Statement Development Every class develops a mission statement with the students. We are answering questions such as why are we here – what do we need to do to make that happen. By doing this, we hope to develop unity and a common goal with our students. • Plan, Do, Study, Act - frequent cycles of learning by setting short-term learning targets. • Smart Goal – Our Plan for PDSA • 2 week cycles – Typical timeline for each math unit. • Student data folders Finally, students track their pretest, quiz and post-test data in their goal folders. Their goal folders also track their reading progress , as well.

  16. Science • Life cycle of mammals • Life cycle of insects • Solids, liquids, and gas • Weather conditions • Human Body • Scientific Process

  17. Social Studies • Harcourt Social Studies Curriculum • Communities and team-building • American History and symbols • World History • Geography and maps • Basic Economics • Native Americans

  18. Thinking Maps • Terramar is a “Thinking Maps” school! • What are Thinking Maps??? • *They are a tool for helping children map out their thinking and make sense of their own learning. • Used daily in our classroom…look for them to come home! • Ask your child about his/her maps!!!

  19. Homework: Tic Tac Tomework • Handed out every Friday • Due the following Friday morning • No “Fun Recess” for students who fail to complete and turn in homework packet on time • Student’s responsibility to complete & return homework • Homework – always a review • Reading log – 100 minutes a week! • As a parent, your role is to check your child’s homework packet. • Tic TacTomework Template
