  2. REASONS FOR THE FALL OF NEW FRANCE (1701-1766)

  3. 1. Acadia • 1702- Queen Anne’s War leads to the loss of Acadia (kinda) • New France relied heavily on the St. Lawrence River for defense. • Story of Acadia is linked to the eventual Fall of France • Key- once Fortress of Louisbourgh fell to the English, the colony wasvulnerable to attack.

  4. 2. ECONOMY The problems with Mercantilism • Provided France with the raw materials that they manufactured. France then sold the manufactured goods back to New France. Advantage: • This system made the colonies a profitable economic enterprise for France Disadvantage: - the development of the colony was always in the interest of the mother country and not the colony. Trade with other places was forbidden • Mercantilism kept the colony dependent on France. • Lack of economic development kept the population very small (70,000). • The 13 colonies to the South (English) had about 1.5 million people.

  5. 3.AREA OF NEW FRANCE • New France colony was very large in size. • A small population had to defend a long frontier.

  6. 4. DISSENSION IN THE COLONY • Bigot “The Corrupt Intendant” • took advantage of the colony during wartime. (inflated prices, spent lavishly) • Montcalm and the Governor (Vaudreuil) did not agree on defence policy for New France. • Montcalm “The Reluctant General” • Homesick, heart was not in the conflict • Preferred to respond to British moves • Governor Vaudreuil • Disagreed continually with Montcalm • Preferred controlling the events • Take the battle to the British

  7. 5. Plains of Abraham • Plains of Abraham to Battle of Signal Hill (Seven Years War)
