Use the Present Tense when… • To describe what is happening now. • To describe factual things that have happened but may not be happening now. • It rains a lot in Portland. • I use my bike to get around town. • To describe things scheduled by nature or people. • High tide is at 3:15 p.m. • The Super Bowl starts at 6:15 p.m.
Use the Past Tense When… • the time period has finished. • the action is finished. • Regular Verbs • Use the basic form of the verb plus –ed ending. • Screamed • Worked • Irregular Verbs • The spelling of each form of an irregular verb changes when the tense changes. • Slept • Drank • Drove
Use the Future Tense When… • An action has not happened yet. • She will leave soon. • We shall overcome. • form the future tense by using the verbs “to go”, “will”, “shall” and “to be”. • He is going to faint. • I am leaving later today. • You are to be back on the base by midnight. • If he is to pass this exam, he’ll have to study harder.
